    WEBB NEARLY A ROOSTER

COWBOYS enforcer Carl Webb has been involved in secret talks to join the Roosters. When the Roosters lost Anthony Cherrington for the season they started looking for a solution to their back-row issues, which worsened with the early-season injury to Jared Waerea Hargreaves. Webb was the target and talks went on with his manager, Sam Ayoub, for a couple of weeks. In the end a financial arrangement could not be reached. It is understood Webb met Roosters coach Brian Smith.

Totally agree, we dodged a bullet there.
If the Roosters are short on backrowers, why would they look at a prop?
And surely looking to the ranks of Rooster-contracted Jets would be a better idea?

Carl Webb is the QLD version of Willie Mason.

Top player 4-5 years ago, had a few years of mediocrity, all bark and no bite. As much as I would believe that if anyone could get the best out of Webb, its Smith, the fact is that Smith released Mason for a reason, and there is no doubt in my mind that Webb's ridiculous overhyped attitude and excessive needless aggression to the point of sheer stupidity is not worth him being approached.

If Lima is off the list now (apparently with Bulldogs losing Hannant, Lima is odds on to go there), I would suggest a similar sort of player - either a hard-working hitup machine prop who is noted for ability but still yet to be recognized as a marquee player, or an explosive, sizeable linebreaking backrower in the Tupou mould.

I'd really like to see Laffranchi at the club. I mean, you could argue that he's getting old, but he works his ass off for every game.

would have been a really stupid move to have signed Webb.

looks like the club has a bit of cash free under this years salary cap, thanks to the release of Mason and Friend, it is important they don't just spend the money because its there, it would be better spent either extending contracts of some of our promising juniors or chasing a few of the younger school boy stars that could be attracted with a bit of extra cash.

                    Correct Fletch.

We have already tied up Perrett, Pearce, Kenny-Dowall, Carney, Jones, JWH, Cherrington, Myles, Cordner, Du Plessis all long-term (either 2012 or 2013), with Williamson, Graham, Ryles, Symonds, M Aubusson and Anasta all off-contract at the end of 2011.

The main focus areas at the moment are probably the front row (Paea, Kennedy, Masoe and Arona are all off-contract at the end of this year I believe) and hooker (Friend is released, Jorbs and Kouparitsas are off-contract at the end of this year).

If we were to make any buys for 2011, it would have to be in that area. I believe we can make do without Cherrington for the meantime.

Roosters are close to announcing a new signing in the very near future, and he is a backrower. Also Jake Freind will be back by round 10.
