  • SMH NRL Power Rankings (WTF?)

    http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/nrl-power-rankings

    1. Melbourne Storm
    2. St George Illawarra
    3. West Tigers
    4. Gold Coast Titans
    5. Parramatta Eels
    6. Penrith Panthers
    7. Sydney Roosters
    8. Canterbury Bulldogs
    9. Brisbane Broncos
    10. Newcastle Knights
    11. Manly Sea Eagles
    12. South Sydney Rabbitohs
    13. North Queensland Cowboys
    14. New Zealand Warriors
    15. Canberra Raiders
    16. Cronulla Sharks

Ok, so, how do the Bulldogs 'power rank' better than the Knights?
How do the Storm hold first position after barely beating Cronulla?
How do the Titans end up forth with a horrible win over the Warriors at Skilled Park??
How are the Roosters seventh after being one of three times to put in an 80 minute effort in attack and defense?
How are the West Tigers third after barely scraping past a team (Manly) with inexperienced halves?

My Power Rankings from last weekend -

    1. St George
    2. Parramatta Eels
    3. Sydney Roosters
    4. Penrith Panthers
    5. Newcastle Knights
    6. Melbourne Storm
    7. West Tigers
    8. Manly Sea Eagles
    9. Gold Coast Titans
    10. Brisbane Broncos
    11. New Zealand Warriors
    12. Canterbury Bulldogs
    13. Canberra Raiders
    14. Cronulla Sharks
    15. South Sydney Rabbitohs
    16. North Queensland Cowboys

I realise everyones will be different, but geez I feel like Greg Prichard got last weeks awfully wrong?

Dragons, Eels & Roosters are my top 3 simply because they're the only teams all weekend to put in an 80 minute performance, every other team seemed to switch on / off at the 40 minute mark.

Spot on Chris, those rankings make no sense but yours do to my mind.

It looks like it's based on 3 things...

      Performances from last season
      Expectations for this season
      Performances this season

With current performances having the highest weighting... I don't necessarily agree with a few but I don't think they're far off to be honest.

I mean do the Knights deserve to be above the Dogs who are obviously a far superior team and proved so last year for a long period of time?

Do the Storm, 4 years in a row Grand Finalists, just won the WCC deserve to be anywhere but 1st after proving week after week what a professional and clinical team they are? I can't really argue against it...

      etc etc...

I would have switched the Raiders and the Sharks. The Raiders were probably the most off the pace team in the comp and the Sharks would have taken a lot out of pushing the Storm.

I could also see the Cowboys a little higher and they definitely shouldn't be last. Even though their first half was pretty bad, they still looked dangerous in it and were guilty of pushing passes more than anything else. If a things had stuck early in the first half they would have probably put 50 on the Broncs.

They only lost by 6 to the dragons who made shit all errors and they showed committment in attack and defense for 80 minutes, which 13 other teams weren't able to do.

              they lost

there's no way they rank higher than every other side who won...

What's the point then. Why not just put the current NRL ladder up if you want to base it purely on Round 1!

                  No im not kidding?
Did you WATCH the games over the weekend?

Even though they lost to the Dragons (who I think were the best team ALL round), they still played better then 14 other teams in the comp in round 1.

Like I said, I realised everyones would be different. That's simply my opinion.

                    watched every game

St George ground out a dull win, and Parra couldn't beat them

the Roosters belted the much vaunted Souths

No way were Parra better than the Roosters

In fact, no way were St George better than the Roosters

Thats a bit better, and I do agree the Roosters played well ToK, but I don't want to sound bias by placing them first!

Power rankings are nothing more than an excuse to disect the real premiership ladder and try and down play the achievements of some teams and overrate others, they mean nothing and serve no real purpose other than people living out a fantsy ladder.

Parramatta lost last friday and that is the only stat that matters.
