  • Cowboys away.

Hi guys, thought it might be time for a football related thread.

The Loiner and a few like minded drinking folk are heading up to Townsville for the season opener.

Having never been there for a game, I was hoping for a few tips: pubs, flights, accommodation, where to stand at the ground, and the most important one, do they sell full strength beer at the ground?

Hope this is in the correct section, was having a look around earlier and notice that there have been a few bannings lately.

My partner is a cowboys fan (don't hold it against me) and we flew up to watch a game in Townsville last season. We stayed at Jupiter's on the strand. First time I've been up there and I thought the strand was a beautiful place so staying anywhere there is good in my opinion. We took a bus direct to the stadium. Think it might have been about 30 minute bus ride to the ground. Which was good because we saw more of Townsville.

Public transport from the ground back was really easy. Plenty of buses to and from. The one thing that was irritating was that we bought tickets at the door. The best tickets I could buy were 50$ and were virtually on the try line. I'd try and buy tickets before hand so I knew where I was sitting for next time. Also considering flying up for the opener. And if we lose I might have to leave the Mrs up there.

Yeah it gets pretty intense cause we really give it to each other when we play. Thank god for that knock on in the semi. Was finally able to shut her up about that 50 point flogging we copped in Darwin.

cI went up about 8yrs ago, stayed at a random place in the city. I really ejoyed it, a very passionate crowd and good venue with good elevation. The best part was we won the game!

I thought it was real expensive same prices as here and the food was pretty crap lol

Last year we were on the hill at the southern end. Was great even though raining. I was drinking spirits so dont know about beer. I was staying with my bro in law but I would get accommo near the strand .. it's great. A lot of the Roosters walk and dine at the strand b4 the game. I caught a taxi to the ground from city last time I think it was like 30 bucks

Remember back in Freddy and Lammys day when we had a ridiculous ly good record against the Cows. Something like 17 out of last 20. U woulda had a field day with the missus.

I went up in 2013. Its an away trip worth doing. If you stay in city centre or either side of river you cant really go wrong.

The ground was further out from the city centre than I imagined but that's no dramas. I ended up getting one of the buses that leave from the leagues club so worked well. The club is in the city and you just buy the ticket from the club on the night. You get the odd heckle on the trip but there were other roosters supporters on the bus so its no drama.

I sat in the roosters away section, its about 10m line to deadball line from memory, not the greatest seats but its with Easts supporters. I organised tickets from the Easts leagues club at the time. Since its a Round 1 game you might have to think of organising tickets sooner rather than later as they normally get decent crowds for Round 1.

There is a decent nightclub strip there but, just remember they have a lockout there around 2 I think. So don't get caught out like I did on that one.

Got my tickets already sorted, usually a big crowd for opener, given " knock on - knock out controversy " expecting a lot of Pre game hype.

The Strand is good , but Holiday Inn " Sugar Shaker " is central , Leagues Club across road, which has busses to and from game , night club strip " Flinders St east " 2 blocks away , restaurant strip " Palmer St " straight over river via foot bridge .

The ground is pretty compact so everywhere is close with good views.

                    See you there.

You need to be in the city center.Leagues club is in the middle of the city and the buses leave from behind the club in Sturt. After the game try and hop on the bus with cowboys leagues club on it as it is direct and saves a bit of time.Accom is plentiful Holiday inn,Robert Towns,City Oasis.Oaks on Palmer,Rydges. If you are on a budget Coral Lodge B&B in Hale st is good value and the guy that runs it supports the chooks.Pm me if you want to check on anything before you come up as i live in Tsv.I am a bit worried about this game guys as it will still be stinking hot here. The coaching staff might look at bringing the boys up a bit early imo.Not as hot as that debacle in Darwin but it will be pretty close to it.
