Undercard Fight: Willis Meehan v Will Quarrie

    4x3min rounds

Round 4: Quarrie didn't give up and put in a good effort in the final round, but will be too little too late for Shane Cameron's sparring partner. It's yet to be official but fight looks to have gone Meehan's way.

Round 3: Meehan has put in some huge hits in this round, credit to Quarrie who is still standing, although certainly is feeling the power of those punches from the rising star.

Round 2: The 19-year old Meehan is pretty confident, but Quarrie showing his experience, put Meehan on the ropes a couple of times but Meehan had a huge last few seconds to the round, in which he knock Quarrie down.

Round 1: Not too many punches through in the opening round, as they both try to get an idea of each other. Meehan looks a lot bigger than Quarrie. Meehan doing plenty of teasing.

      Thanks SBB

I wonder if his earnings will count towards the Roosters salary cap?

Tongue in cheek no doubt. And if boxing is part of his pre season then augurs well not only for only himself but the Roosters as well..
"Do you expect me to talk"? "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die".

Found a report (see below) on his debut fight, looks like more fights to come this off season.

Noticed Willis is not listed in the Roosters profiles at present.
Is he off contract until his fight commitments are over, so the earnings from fighting don't count towards the salary cap?
          (Vanilla contract ?).

Willis Meehan is a big kid who is heading for even bigger things.

Standing 1.95m and weighing 120kg, the baby-faced back-rower from the Roosters made his professional boxing debut in encouraging fashion at the North Shore Events Centre with a unanimous decision victory over Will Quarrie tonight.

Quarrie, who dropped to 5-3 for his career, is no bum and the durable Kiwi was sent to the canvas in the second frame via a well-placed right hand but he showed his toughness to take Meehan the full four rounds.

"I didn't want to go too far off the gameplan and he's a tough guy; he's got a bit of experience as well and he's fought some big punchers before," Meehan said.

"So I knew he could take a punch but I got the win so that's the main thing."
Meehan is a unique customer in the ring. He switches stances from orthodox to southpaw and keeps his hands low, which is rare for a heavyweight.

That approach may change as his career moves on but the 19-year-old, who is coached by father Kali, was confident in his ability.

"That's my style," Meehan Jnr said. "It's very unorthodox and it worked; got the job done."
The teenager has sparred with one-time world title challenger Alex Leapai and had an impressive amateur career across the Tasman.

He made his NRL debut for the Roosters earlier this year and it's easy to draw the comparison to the code-hopping Sonny Bill Williams who has also dabbled in boxing, among his pursuits on the rugby and league fields.

"Sonny's a close friend of mine and he's helped me massively, just in the way he deals with crossing codes and every bit of advice he's given me has worked," Meehan said.
The youngster won't have to wait long until he laces up the gloves for the second time as a professional as he will meet a yet-to-be-determined opponent in Sydney on December 3.

That bout will come on the undercard of Australian middleweight Daniel Geale's match with Jarrod Fletcher.

Meehan plans to fight three times in the NRL's off-season and he said balancing both sports was a manageable task.

"The Roosters are really supportive, really helpful with everything I do, all the way from the players to the chairman of the board," Meehan said.

"I'm living my dream at the moment; playing professional footy, fighting professionally. So until I have to make a decision, I'm just going to enjoy every moment."

Meehan's win was the opening bout of tonight's cruiserweight Super 8 card that was headlined by a career-defining bout between Kiwi heavyweights Kali Meehan and Shane Cameron.

The younger Meehan, who was born in New Zealand but is a junior Kangaroo and identifies as an Australian in the boxing game, said it was a great moment to take his maiden professional fight on a card headlined by his father.

          "It's special; it's really special."

There's sure to be plenty more special moments in Meehan's sporting career.

I have a feeling this kid is going to be something special both in the ring, and on the field for us. I am just going to enjoy the ride.
