The difference was when the games that counted came around Souths had the momentum that we had shown previously. Where we were scraping home in the last few games, Souths were smashing their opposition. Us beating them for the minor premiership was the best thing that could've happened for them

Apart from the 3 quick penalties they got when they were 12-0 down and struggling in the play off game.....

Yeah but like a bad rash with no cure, it'll be back after a couple of alcopops.

I too am finding it hard to accept this season's performance. Initially I was okay with it. Souths totally outplayed us. But when you look at the season as a whole, particularly the finals, we blew it.
            It's still killing me.

In fact, I am not sure I will ever get over it.

I am not talking suicide but I will always get a headache on when I remember it.

WE handled it better in 2013 because we were a better team. May be this year's explanation is souths successfully milked 2 penalties a game with the likes of Luke and others staying down. And to compound the difference Robbos edict that we don't lie down may have cost us 1 penalty per game equal to 26 penalties for the season, which would then take us up to the other clubs average for the season. I still think Robbos edict is wrong because we don't get the penalties we deserve. The flow on effect is greater fatigue in defending , less opportunities to attack....This explanation doesn't explain the 10 to 20 year longterm lack of penalties...................

To be honest, I'm finding League close to unwatchable.

Other than Origin, I can't remember a game I enjoyed in 2014. Watching us was particularly difficult. But games involving neutrals weren't a lot better.

Too many discretionary penalties turning games.

In an effort to rid the game of the wrestle, they're over policing the ruck. There's no consistency and more often than not I don't understand what the penalties are for.

                    League's at the cross roads.

I strongly believe it's heading down the path of rugby, where officiating has murdered the spectacle.

Souths winning this year was a bad result. The NRL will label it a successful season in light of the fairytale. Then more of the same penalty avalanches dictating results in 2015.

Nailed it mate. It's time they put the whistle away.

Although some of the refs seem to love the power......it'll be a hard habit to break.

                      There's a song there somewhere.

Almost all the best games have < 10 penalties a game.

We were the exception last year given we'd concede 10 on our own lol

But sadly 10-8 penalty counts are the norm.

I think it's very sad when a team - Souffs - base their style of play around winning penalties... rather than attacking rugby league.

Thank God since they were third in points scored Imagine if they based their game on attack

If you divide the points scored by the penalties received you can see a stark difference between us and the vermin

Roosters points scored per penalty received 4.55
Vermin points scored per penalty received 2.67

Here is the table for points scored per penalty received

                            Roosters 4.55
                            Warriors 3.75
                            Cowboys 3.61
                            Brisbane 3.54
                            Eels 3.43
                            Storm 3.19
                            StMerge 3.08
                            Sea Eagles 3.07
                            Knights 3.06
                            Raiders 2.94
                            Panthers 2.85
                            VERMIN 2.67
                            Tigers 2.59
                            Bulldogs 2.50
                            Titans 2.15
                            Sharks 2.12

                              Wow.

Thank you for proving my point.

Souffs play a boring ball control style knowing they'll get lots of penalties.

We can't afford to play that brand of footy because we receive a staggeringly small number of penalties.
