Watching the old 'classic' games on fox, it becomes apparent that it's only a recent occurrence for the refs to get involved so much - they used to let the games flow, and they were better spectacles for it.
No one ever came out of a game thinking the ref improved things by blowing 20 penalties.

That's pretty damning proof of, dare I say it, match fixing by the officials.Comment of the year:

I live in South Randwick and hang around Maroubra/Malabar al the time in my day to day activities. It's a Souths area and their fans abound. I actually don't mind their fans tasting a bit of "success" like this, and the ones I know I have expressed my well wishes to freely without being mean enough to bring up the obvious - that their team could not have won a GF without the outrageous leg up from the officials particularly over the last 2 years. They may not even have made the 8 had they had our penalty differential. Our team has copped it from many on here over their finals form - I believe exhaustion, not unfitness, told in the end. They simply could not withstand the penalty bashing they received this year because of the rule changes and speeding up of ruck (and biased policing of it). They were somehow able to overcome it last year; and had the Casty try not been stolen from them in the Penrith semi they would have had a week off and just maybe gone back to back.
But hey, it was Souths' turn this year and I'm not bitter about it. They just needed a lot of help, but good on them.

The figures are damning. Really, there is no reason why all teams shouldn't roughly be receiving the same amount of penalties. Yes, there are always anomalies but for Souths to get 31.1% more penalties and us to receive 16.7% less is obscene & defies logic - and it happened in one season as well. Any wonder we hit the wall in the last few games . It was a bridge too far.
I now take far greater pride in the performance of the team over the past 2 seasons. We weren't handed anything on a platter and yet scored one GF win & 2 MPs.

It's true.
We also had by far the hardest draw.
We also had no offseason.
We have plenty of excuses but we also had a team "on paper" that could more than overcome them.
But at the end of the day we blew it - BIG TIME.
As Robbo said at the Awards Night, the difference between this season and last was that last season everyone was going in the same direction and this season he had to deal with a lot of different personalities.
It's such as wasted opportunity and when you consider Souffs won it and the part we played in that it is devastating.

What does that mean? Everyone wanted to get piss wrecked except Sonny?
Seriously. Is he going to be moving players on?

I too am finding it hard to accept this season's performance. Initially I was okay with it. Souths totally outplayed us. But when you look at the season as a whole, particularly the finals, we blew it.
