  • Roosters Penalty Stats

I'm still filthy that the NRL refs stole our back-to-back premiership and handed it to Souths on a platter. Apart from every call going Souths way in the Semi, I think the following longer-term Stats are telling - and indicative of a serious injustice over many years. I don't see a deliberate NRL conspiracy, but with so much sentiment for Souths (and against the Roosters) in the media, the Refs buy into it and influence accordingly.

    - Souths were awarded 84 more penalties than the Roosters in 2014! How can that happen, when we are playing exactly the same opposition teams? If anything, with the Roosters being minor premiers and top scorers they could have expected the most penalties due to the greater pressure placed on opposition defences. Yet we received the fewest penalties of any side.

    - Over the past 7 years, Roosters have a -297 penalty differential! The next worst is the Dogs on -104. Souths of course, lead on +153. That's a 450 penalty advantage on the Roosters - or avge 64 a year.

    - Roosters haven't had a positive penalty differential in 10 years! Souths have 8 straight years of positive penalty differentials.

With penalties so crucial in the modern game to possession flow and point-scoring, it demonstrates how the Roosters have been playing with one hand tied behind their back.

    Preaching to the choir!

It's an outrage. But we're not the Cowboys or some other charity case so nobody cares. And if nobody cares, nothing changes.

I'm constantly told by other supporters that these things all eventually even themselves out over time.
At this rate though, it may take another century to even out ?

Yep when penalties are down from last year Souths happen to receive over 30% more than they did last year.
They got over 60% more than us this year yet we play similar teams.
If they received an average amount of penalties they would not have made the top 4.
        It is scandalous.

On a positive, for our boys to get minor premiers on those stats is a phenomenal effort.

The NRL needs to get its act together or people will start voting with their feet in even greater numbers.

My protest was to reduce my watching of other teams. I do not subscribe to Fox (for multiple reasons) and my choice with others not to watch Ch9 hurts 9 and eventually the NRL.

People, I urge you to consider a similar silent protest if this c**p continues next year.

im just annoyed that the aru cant get its act together otherwis4e its a good game to watch if you understand rhe rules although many international refs , mostly south africaans also provide the uncertainty and apprehension about the rules that we are familiar with at the roosters, how could I expect any one not totally familiar with those rules to enjoy a penalty fest so beloved of non attacking northern hemisphere teams!

It's Robbo's job to get this addressed by the NRL.

Instead he opts for the turn the other cheek option.

                Noble, but highly unsuccessful.

In any event, penalties are ruining League. A touch finder marching you up the field 20 is too big a bonus if the refs are going to blow 20 fouls a game. It should just be a turnover. The extra possession is penalty enough.

I am a strong believer in the removal of the sideline penalty kick (more like 40metre gain) after a penalty is awarded.

The less impact a referee has on the result of the game, can only be a good thing.
In no other sport does the referee influence the result of the game as much as Rugby League does, with a blow of the whistle.
If the NRL wants to reduce the controversy around referees, then reduce the impact they make when handing out penalties

They should be instructed to wind the penalties back across the board.

Watching the old 'classic' games on fox, it becomes apparent that it's only a recent occurrence for the refs to get involved so much - they used to let the games flow, and they were better spectacles for it.

No one ever came out of a game thinking the ref improved things by blowing 20 penalties.

I have always thought it is to much of advantage to get the 40m gain plus a set of 6. I would like to see an option given to the team receiving the penalty being:

1.choose to play on from where the penalty is awarded with a fresh set of 6, or

                      2. Kick for the sideline and resume the tackle count from which tackle you were awarded the penalty.

If this is an issue, why doesn't the club say a thing other than a small whinge after a game or two. Why is it we are the only whinge about it? 'Step back and smell the roses' and stop whingeing about what others didn't get but more like what we got which MANY(NOT ALL) penalties were deserved.

Where did you pull that from? He said already on one of the press conferences that he has been trying to get answers from the Tony Archer but he does not respond to him.

Good thinking but how many penalties would Souffs be awarded on the 1st tackle?
