  • Robbo about to get contract extension and big phat pay rise

Trent Robinson started out as one of the least paid coaches in the NRL, but a premiership in his first season and another one up for grabs is set to see him be catapulted into the top echelon of coaches.

Robinson is off contract at the end of next year and given he is on track to become the first coach in rugby league history to win back-to-back premierships in his first two seasons, the 37-year-old is poised for a substantial pay rise.

Having originally signed a three-year deal with the Roosters worth close to $250,000 a season, Robinson is set to earn almost three times as much when he sits down with the club in the coming weeks to discuss a contract extension.

Both Robinson and the Roosters have agreed to meet after the finals series to discuss the plans for 2016 and beyond.

There's no doubt Robinson would be one of the most sought after coaches in the game if he was to explore his options, but the Roosters are keen to tie him down before he becomes target for other clubs.

Robinson could demand close to $700,000 a season – a figure that would put him behind the likes of premiership winners Craig Bellamy, Des Hasler, Wayne Bennett and Ricky Stuart at the top of the coaching tree. If he was to win another premiership this year he and could earn up to a $1 milion a year with bonuses.

The cost of a coach has recently been inflated by Nathan Tinkler's pursuit of Bennett for close to $1 million a year, as well as Canterbury's desire to lure Hasler from Manly to Belmore on a lucrative deal.

While Roosters supremo Nick Politis is traditionally renowned for not wanting to pay overs for a coach, he may be forced to do so in order to retain Robinson.

The former Catalans Dragons English Super League coach was awarded a bonus in excess of $200,000 for leading the Roosters to premiership glory over Manly last year, and has a similar incentive on the cards if he can deliver a repeat dose in 2014.

He's led the Roosters to back-to-back minor premierships with final-round victories against South Sydney in each campaign, and a win against Penrith at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night will leave him just 80 minutes from another grand final.

Skipper Anthony Minichiello, who will retire at the end of the season, said Robinson's contribution to the club has been significant, proving himself as a top grade coach when most people were asking, 'Trent who?'.

"He's been outstanding for us as a playing group and as a club," Minichiello said.

"The great thing about Robbo is that he's played at the Roosters; he understands the history of the club and the culture of the club. He brought that straight back in as soon as he became head coach, and that's important.

"When he signed, a lot of people said who's that, but we knew what he'd bring to the table, the club knew what he'd bring to the table and he certainly delivered. He's a great coach, he has a great work ethic and I'm sure he'll be a career coach –hopefully at the Roosters."

The Roosters were interested in Craig Bellamy as a replacement for Brian Smith, but would have had to wait until this season to sign the Storm coach because he was still under contract with Melbourne for 2013.

Minichiello was reluctant to rank Robinson against the list of coaches he's played under but insists his newest coach will be regarded as one of the best he's had.

"It's hard to see he's the best coach because I've had some great coaches in my time," Minichiello said. "But at the end of my career, if I had to rate them, he'd definitely be up there."

Minichiello also said he's held brief discussions with Robinson about the possibility of joining the coaching staff next season.

"We've had a brief chat about a couple of things," he said.

"We'll chat again at a later date because our focus is on the finals now."

Hope the contract talks happen after the GF (victory?).

Didn't know he played for us.

      Love him even more now.

            Backrower?

Pretty sure he played lower grades for us, with Mini perhaps, before moving to the Wests Tigers.

It's funny, I could not imagine anyone but Robbo as our coach. He seems to fit the club better than any coach I have seen at the joint.

Robbo is a great human being first, that's what makes him a great coach. The contract extension is a mere formality.I can see him becoming like Bill Belichick at the New England Patriots,or Sir Alex Ferguson at Manure UTD.

Your New England Patriots got there ass kicked by the dolphins fits round on Monday.
Gus Worland with Mark Geyer is a laugh they were giving it to each other this morning and they made a bet the loser has to get a tattoo of the oppositions emblem with tear drops falling on their nipples.

                        Robbo is really, really sharp.

In the Nuke game, he had another look when the Nuke winger picked the ball up over the dead ball line before it bounced over the dead ball line. Apparantly this is the same as if he carried it over the DB line, hence a drop out not a 22m restart. Robbo was right, refs were wrong.

Then in the last game, he mentioned that Toups only passed the ball to Souffs player because he called out his name. Apparantly this is illegal(?). I had no idea about this. Looks like refs had no idea either.

                        He really is smart.

After last year's GF, Robbo talked about how Eastern Suburbs was never always the posh, snobby, upper class area that it is caricatured (sometimes justifiably) as today.

And he is dead right. Some parts were as tough and working class as any suburbs out there. Very different now though.

                          He certainly knows our history.

Would love to think that he may be an Easts fan as well just like Uncle Nick and Big Jack.

Whats your point? The Roosters lost to Suffs in round 1 and went on to become minor premiers.Miami = Suffs same shit colours.

He played lower grades from 1995-97 I think. He started in SG Ball and played as high as reserve grade before moving to Balmain.

I was lucky enough to do an interview with him last year and I was impressed at how much he knew about Easts' history.
