What a joke. You seem to be forgetting that Abbott's old boss, Howard, helped CREATE this situation in Iraq in the first place. For those of us who opposed the 2003 invasion, one of the things we warned against by removing Saddam in this way was that it would create a power vacuum and lead to civil war and the rise of militant Islam -- something that was never permitted to gain a foothold under the old regime.

So just remember, Abbott helped CAUSE this current Iraq mess in the first place. Like Howard, he should be in gaol for war crimes.

Ahem...we have a thing called the ANZUS Treaty/Alliance.

The President of the USA and its Congress [rightly or wrongly] decided they'd had enough of Saddam, Al Qaeda and started the Coalition Of the Willing to fight with them in the War on Terror.

Given that we basically have a few ships, a few planes, a small ill-equipped army, no nukes..."popguns and toy ships" if you like...and don't have the first hope in hell of defending ourselves...John Howard and his govt had no other real option but to invoke ANZUS and sign on to the C.O.W.
