  • Friend's season not over yet: Roosters

Trent Robinson has confirmed Jake Friend remains a possibility of playing again in 2014 after the Roosters hooker was discharged from hospital late on Tuesday.

Friend underwent surgery earlier in the week for a chest injury that had him struggling to breathe, and suffering from dizziness and vomiting in the aftermath of his side's 24-12 win over Melbourne last weekend.

The injury was diagnosed as a Haemothorax – essentially collection of blood in the chest cavity – and an operation on Monday successfully located the source of the bleeding before Friend was cleared of any infection and allowed to return home after 72 hours in the intensive care unit at Randwick's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Robinson said Friend was in good spirits despite the health scare, and indicated a return for finals football remained a possibility for the 25-year-old rake.

"It is a possibility that he will play in finals," Robinson said.

"He's bruised and battered but he's a fighter so he's on the mend.

"Friendy as usual he's as tough as they come, he's a Queenslander so he doesn't say much. But he's pretty strong, he's taken it in his stride."

A return for Week 3 of the finals appears to be the earliest return date for Friend. Should the Roosters finish the regular season in the top two, which a win over the Rabbitohs this Thursday would confirm, a follow-up victory in the first week of the finals would ensure their influential dummy-half only misses two games.

It is unclear when Friend can resume training, and Robinson confirmed the Roosters' first priority was Friend returning to full health.

"Like anybody that goes through that it's about getting back to day dot, back to health, and then he can get back to fitness," Robinson said.

"Our focus at the moment is getting him back to health.

"The length of that recovery to health will decide if he does get back to some fitness to play in the finals. I'd never back Jake out."

Robinson has named utility Mitch Aubusson to start in Friend's place for the clash with arch-rivals South Sydney, and confirmed back-up hooker Heath L'Estrange's recovery from what was feared to be a season-ending knee injury suffered two weeks ago had been fast tracked due to Friend's absence.

"We thought it was going to be the season but [L'Estrange] has recovered well," he said.

"It is earlier because of Jake, so he'll need to get it sorted pretty well tomorrow night for a short stint. But he's a pretty seasoned footy player and he's pretty courageous so he'll get it done."

And that's what I've been waiting for... words of progress from the club/coach. Not someone's doctor friend, relative, or pet dog.

    Great news.

Friend is as tough as they come and I suspect that he'll prove to be a remarkably quick healer.

The club unquestionably has his best interests at heart. So they'll focus on his health first, but you can't keep a warrior like Jake down so watch him mend quickly and return for the Prelim!

good 13 minute interview up on the website from Robbo today

        http://www.roosters.com.au/news/2014..._play_for.html

        some of the major points:

        - Friend was actually at Roosters HQ today, which was great to hear that he is well enough to be up and about.

        - L'Estrange will only play short minutes tomorrow night and that his return was sped up due to Jake's injury.

        - FPN is going to be out for a couple more weeks and is a moon boot at the moment.

        - found it a little curious that Cummins was at Vermin training this week, felt it is something that shouldn't happen this late in the season.

        - feels we still have some more improvement left in us.

away from the press conference, I did find it interesting that both Kara/Hastings were both at the captains run, although Robbo is pretty straight down the line it wouldn't shock if one of these guys did play instead of L'Estrange.

I know it's a small thing but he was in Prince of Wales Hospital not Prince Alfred. P.O.W. is Randwick, Prince Alfred is in Camperdown.

Having worked at both of them when I was younger, I'd know. P.O.W. takes 15 minutes to get to and R.P.A. takes 90 minutes.
          SUPER DRAGON!

Just saw that. A good interview as always from Robbo.

Hearing that Jake was at HQ was great news. Whilst I don't think we're foxing about his recovery, I suspect that internally they're very confident he'll be right for a Prelim which would be a month's rest.

And his comments re: Ben Cummins being at Souffs training come as no surprise. I'm stunned that it's deemed as allowable. Surely it leaves the NRL open to questions of bias.

Yeah the Ben Cummins out Souffs training certainly is not a good look for the game especially 1 week from seasons end....

If the NRL are to allow this , it must be that all clubs can invite a ref to there training sessions within the 1st - 4 rounds of the season starting.

Yes there are always many questions re bias, yet it still happens, and they still get around it. Add another one to the list.

As Fletch said it is interesting to see Hastings/Kara at the training run and no sign of the Stranger.
                  Could be a late change

Whilst it has been allowed in the past, it is not a good look to have refs assisting training sessions just prior to semis.

Surely Cummins is not on our refs panel this weekend?

Should the Integrity Unit have a say in this or are they yet another reactive lot...

As tough as any player I've ever seen.

He'll do anything to get back on the field and represent the RWB with pride. Whether he does or not is irrelevant... it's his dedication to the team that you've gotta love.

I love this man as much as Freddy, Fitzy, Mini and Morley.

                              Legend.
