  • Playing souths Three times!

There is a high chance we will play souths twice in consecutive weeks round 26 and first semi final if we both finish 2nd and 3rd. If we have 3rd spot locked up would you risk fielding our best side in round 26 or rest all players with slight injuries and also not give the opponents the opportunity o tune their game up against our game style ?

Based on current table positions we could lose to souths round 26 and the first semi and then play manly in the major final before meeting souths in the GF or beat souths in first semi and then beat either Penrith, Melbourne or warriors in the major final. All very doable !!

I reckon we'll only play them once in week 1 of the finals.

Win or lose, we then go onto the other side of the draw for them for week 2 and 3, and Souffs will choke in the prelim yet again.

I remember a semi...I think it was 1997 where they tried to rest the main players but the ARL deemed they couldn't for some arseheaded reason and Freddy and Lam ran out with high numbers (like 65 and 67 if memory serves)

        It was against Norths.

I think we still rested a few though.

Incidentally, Easts and Souths haven't played a finals match since the 1930s.

              That's their fault not ours.

IMO we should field our best team every week no matter what's at stake.

I don't buy the theory that you 'risk' players by making them play footy. If anything you risk players by fielding a 1/2 arsed team because we'll get smashed, people will get tired and there will be more pressure on the star players who do run out.

Injuries are bad luck. They happen at training and at home when there's no footy being played. We need all the practice we can get in order to play Souffs!!! We should play with our best team and try our hardest in round 26 because anything less is disrespecting our jersey.

Maybe leave a few tricks/secret tactics out, but NEVER field a lame team. It's disrespectful/dishonourable, risks injuries, denies us important match practice and makes us look over-confident/cocky (which always comes back to bite us).

If Souffs wanna field a lame team then let them. Allows us to smash/injure their stars who choose to play (e.g. Keary, Reynolds, Te'o and one of those Burgess tools), get grubs like Isaac Luke suspended and prevent them from getting the minor premiership if we can't have it.

Very well said mate. Unless they have niggling injuries, I can't see Trent fielding anything less then a full strength side. Most of the boys have had time off this year due to injuries and rep football and are no doubt hungry to play as much as they can. I would think any one of the boys would be pissed off if they were rested.

And it's safe to say that unless they have the minor premiership rapped up by round 26 (which I doubt), Souffs won't be resting any players. They were desperate to win that last year and I heard one of their officials mention over the weekend on radio that they are very keen to win it this season. That's the difference between us and Souffs - we play smart, with the long-term in mind, whilst they look as if they play every match like a grand final. The lap of honour after they beat Manly two rounds back was evident of that.
