  • Pearce and running the ball with two hands.

Is Mitchell Pearce the only halfback in the game that takes the line on carrying the ball with one hand?

Can someone at the Roosters teach this bloke the benefits of taking on the line with the ball in two hands. Show them the ball with both hands Mitchell. He plays so much better when he takes the line on with the ball in both hands. Unfortunately, he seems to like to run the ball with one hand way too often, and try for a miraculous one hander.

    Wake up Pearce.

Every time he takes the ball to the line he has it in two hands. That's why he leads the comp for line break assists. He takes it all the way to the line before passing. It's only when he steps back inside to try and take advantage of lazy ruck defenders that he carries it in one hand to get an offload back to Mini or Pearce. Once the big right foot step has been put on there isn't much point holding it in both hands. Foran gets so many wraps about taking the ball to the line in both hands but I think Pearce is equally good at this if not better. He just puts a lot more through than Foran, whereas Foran has better upper body strength to make it through the line. In my opinion Pearce must really sell the run given he puts so many through on his outside.

It's silly stuff... I think it's just a style. Every time I see GI doing it I think 'I wish somebody would just punch the ball out of his hand and make him look silly so that he uses 2 hands instead of being a smartass!!!'

GI has better ball control and is in a position where he can get away with it. I notice guys like Burgess run using one hand then take the impact using two but this allows him to have a more efficient running style (pumping his arms rather than holding them in front). Also him/GI have MASSIVE hands. Pearce doesn't..

On that note Cordner has HUGE hands!! I saw him at fan day... massive!! Seems to run with the ball in 2 hands or have it tucked into the bread basket.

The thing is the defense knows he is going to run rather than pass
if he holds the ball in one hand and this limits the effectiveness of his running game. I think that is The Sacks point. No argument his passing game is top notch.

            Sorry Bra.

How many Stools series have we won with him as halfback?

I do. I'd rather see Shaun Fensom given a go.

A forward pack looking like this:

                  Woods
                  Farah (if fit)
                  Fifita
                  Fensom
                  Bird
                  Merrin

                  With the bench of

                  Tamou
                  Watmough
                  Cordner
                  Peats

Merrin could go the full 80, slotting back and forth between front row and second row with Cordner slotting into his position.

                  Again, just my opinion.

I know. I was being deliberately obtuse.

Yeah I know what you're saying Sack but they only time he ever holds the ball in one hand when running is when he steps off his right back into the ruck. Whenever he goes to the line wide of the ruck he holds it in two hands, and he barely ever actually runs here because he's quite often sold it very well which is what makes his passing game so great.

When he right foot steps back into the ruck he only ever switches to one hand after the step so the defence already knows he is going to run. It would probably only make his step less effective if he were to hold the ball in two hands through the step (pretty ineffective way to sidestep). The point of that run is take advantage of lazy markers or A defenders so producing a good step is more important in my opinion. I actually think Pearce when running away from the ruck must sell the run very well which is why we never see him go through and instead have so many line break assists. If he wasn't so good at that he would probably get more breaks and people would not criticise his running game as much. The way I see it as long as a break is created I don't care if it's the half or his runner.

And just while I'm actually on here, how useless has the access to this site become. I can barely ever get the page to load anymore.

Never rated the peptide steroid muncher. Has not been the same player since ASADA has come knocking. How many SOO series has Gallen won for New South Wales? I'd rather him not there. He hogs the ball with too many hit ups when the ball should be going elsewhere. Next!

Don't agree at all. Farah is a hog, Gallen's a machine. Didn't he run for 200m in an Origin once? I mean when your front rower plays 80 mins in Origin, runs for 200m and the side doesn't win, it ain't because he's a hog.

That's right. When he was on the peptides, steroids and whatever else he was on. He was ordinary last year and less this year. Next!
