Hi Mickey Lane,

This is a very interesting point you have made and I am now reminded of a match a couple of years ago where the Sydney Roosters surprised everybody and kicked off the game with a short kick off and gained possession of the ball and from there controlled possession and territory for the majority of the game. Perhaps every once in a while it is worth having an attempt at this to try and catch a team off guard.

Its a Smithy and i love the tactic.

I'd personally make all kickoffs a short high contest for possession and only kick long by exception.

Rugby do it that way except its a drop kick.

When I was playing we always used to kick towards the posts. If you get it high enough the posts get in their way and throw them off or if you're good enough to hit them there was a chance of getting it back.

Came off for us quite a bit.

. I'm not a stats man but from what I see, I feel that when it comes to making breaks, I would say we are average ATM.

This surprised me, but according to the stats on NRL.com, we are leading the competition in line breaks. We just can't "ice" them, as Robbo put it.

But that is a VERY encouraging statistic.
