Sydney Roosters unlikely to recall Luke O'Donnell as NRL cover
The Sydney Roosters explored the possibility of Luke O'Donnell making a return to the premiers, but the second-rower is unlikely to play again for the club.
O'Donnell, 33, retired at the end of last season, capping a memorable career that included five games for NSW and 11 Tests for Australia. The former Tigers and Cowboys back-rower was the only player the Roosters lost from the 17 that took the field against Manly on grand final day.
O'Donnell was keen on a comeback, and the Roosters considered registering him on a nominal contract if players became unavailable due to injury or State of Origin duty.
Although he hasn't played since the grand final, O'Donnell is a fitness fanatic who has kept himself in good shape during his sabbatical. He is also highly regarded at Bondi Junction.
The club copped criticism for signing him on a one-year deal last season after a stint for Huddersfield in the English Super League. But he brought great experience to the Roosters forward pack, and played 20 games for the year on a modest wage.
The Tricolours are likely to lose Boyd Cordner at Origin time, while Aidan Guerra is a smoky smokey for the interstate series.
"He was here a couple of weeks ago when he met up with the players for lunch and he's still training, but it hasn't crossed [my desk] at all," Roosters chief executive Brian Canavan said.
