Great Easts team/ Sydney City side. Manly got theirs the week after.
We couldn't get over the hump between 96-99 with Gus. Some tough Semi Finals lost during that era.Comment

Would be so frustrated watching that game again.My memory is a bit sketchy but didn't Dale Shearer play this game?, If I remember rightly even though he was a long way out he spilled a pass with the line wide open.I remember it being 16-6 to Manly with not long to go then Elsegood got a wicked bounce to score wide out them Gourley strolled in under the post to lock the scores up at 16-16 and then it went downhill again in the crazy last couple of minutes

Yes Horrie, I think we would have done Newcastle too if we made the 97 GF. I remember that semi in 1996..I wasn't in the greatest of moods at the end of that day, didn't Freddy play with an injury?...I had just played in a losing team in a touch footy grand final earlier in the day and broke a finger in that game. Losing such a close game in controversial circumstances against Manly was a bitter pill to take. We never got the opportunity to see the Chooks play a final in Sydney even though we won our first two finals and Brisbane lost their earlier final against Parramatta...

From memory, Sean garlick lost the ball so instead of us being in field goal range (with sharpshooters like Walker, Fittler, Lam), instead Manly get the ball and Craig Field gets the shot and wins the game.
We sat through the rain that day only to have the game pinched in the final minute ..... crappy day !Comment
