It depends on what you mean by cheap...
The rooms above the Captain Cook are cheap. They are also loud and you will be surrounded by backpackers. (Could be worse, depending on your idea of fun).
For more comfortable accommodation hit up one of the many hotels around Central Station, or Vibe at Rushcutters Bay (25min walk/$15 cab) (Wotif.com will help you there)
15 mins on the bus will land you deep in Eastern Suburbs territory with cheap(ish) accommodation available at Bondi and Coogee and Clovelly (each suburbs namesake pub has fair to good accommodation at a cheap(er) end of the spectrum.

It seems the WCC game on 22/2/14 is attracting many Roosters & Chookpen fans from far and wide.
It would be an ideal meet and greet opportunity for chookpen contributors......Just putting it out there


NB: Kick-off is scheduled for 7.30pm. Gate opening time to be confirmed. Depends if there's a preliminary game organised. I'm hoping to watch our U20's team. Apparently i've been told they're a big pack, 3 to 4 Kiwi lads including that Piki fella.
