  • Robbo states desire to win WCC also only trial on weekend of auckland 9's

good article in the SMH this morning talking to Robbo yesterday about his thoughts on the upcoming season, he is very motivated to win the WCC so expect anyone who is fit to play, it will be the final hit out before round 1 against the vermin on March 6.

also he said our only trial this year would be the same weekend as the Auckland 9's so that rules out any chance of taking a competitive side over to Auckland.

    below is the full article.

On day one of Sydney Roosters' 2014 campaign, as the defending premiers, coach Trent Robinson wasted no time telling his players that their grand final victory was far from the end of what he has planned for them and the club.

Robinson might be forgiven for allowing himself some further reflection on his remarkable effort of taking the Roosters to a premiership in his rookie season as an NRL coach. But further, more significant, challenges require his attention.

''We wanted to win last season, obviously, but that wasn't the end goal for us either,'' Robinson said, as many of his squad returned to training for the first time since their victory over Manly last month. ''We knew we had players for a certain number of years, so we wanted to really build something.

''It's not, 'We've done what we've set out to do.' It's huge, for us as a club, but we don't feel like we've finished. That wasn't the only goal. We wanted to create something that was long-lasting.''

No team has won back-to-back unified premierships since Brisbane in 1992 and 1993.

Robinson has been focused on that challenge well in advance of Monday's return, having combined a family holiday with a fact-finding mission through Europe, visiting top English and French sporting outfits with his assistants, Jason Taylor and Craig Fitzgibbon.

''Now this'll be the biggest challenge that we've had,'' Robinson said of the prospect of winning again next year.

''We're really focused on it, but we know we're going to have to be - as staff, as players, as a club - better again to do that. No team's done that since Brisbane in '92-'93, and there have been great teams - especially Melbourne and Manly - in the past, that continue to be great year-on-year, and they haven't done it. It's obviously very tough to do.''

Robinson also knows the job will be made tougher logistically.

The Roosters had 16 players at the World Cup - more than any NRL club - while the coach will also have to balance their late arrival to pre-season with his desire to win a World Club Challenge now confirmed for February 22. For the first time since 1994, the WCC will return to Australia, allowing Robinson to at least take travel out of his juggling act. The coach said he and his squad would be highly motivated to defeat Wigan. ''A lot of our players, it's one of the first questions they've asked, 'When's the World Club Challenge?''' he said.

With so many players not due to return to training until January, because of the World Cup, the Roosters would not schedule any trials until the weekend of the Auckland Nines, on February 15 and 16. He will send a squad to Auckland, and play a trial with other players on the same weekend.

I am continually impressed by Trent Robinson as Roosters coach. The club is in great coaching hands whilst ever he is here.

What's the minimum amount of top squad players you have to send to the 9's ?

"Adding to the quality of the teams at the tournament is an agreement by each of the NRL’s 16 clubs which guarantees at least one top five player from each club’s salary cap will play in Auckland alongside at least 12 of each club’s top 25 salary capped players."

Id have skd as the 1 top 5 player, might get some offensive confidence back playing in open spaces.

the 12 top 25 players, robbo might pick on a 'who could we afford to live without if injured long term theory.'

also picked Skd as the top player in the 9's thread for same reason

I wouldn't be saying we have no hope of playing a competitive side in the 9s tournament.. If skd is our top 5 salary cap player, chuck in moga if fit, langi, Evans and maybe lui or napa, old field if he staying, arona... Then I really think sheck will be putting his hand up to play this tournament as its his sort of game, open field and lots of room to move, plus our 20s side and Newtown have got some good young players aswell, I would be surprised if we didn't make a good go regardless of most of our premiership winning team not playing...

Sheck, Moga and SKD are musts IMO, then Maloney, Pearce and Friend and the forwards should be SBW, Evans and Guerra or Aubo. I'm not sure on the bench or if there even is a bench haha.

I don't want RTS or any of our key players near the 9s.

It's a gimmick so no need to risk our stars.

                          - Back to Belmore (Bulldogs v Rabbitohs) - Sunday 9th
                          - Charity Shield (Rabbitohs v Dragons) - weekend of the 23rd
                          - Charity Cup (Bulldogs v Storm @ Suncorp) - weekend of the 23rd
                          - Parramatta hosting one at Darwin or Alice
                          - Knights rumoured 2nd string trial v Roosters on the Nine's weekend. They'll play an Indigenous rep side on the 8th (more of a grades trial than an official one)
                          - Foundation Cup Roosters v Tigers (TBC - might be ditched for the WCC)
                          - Nines, obviously.
                          - WCC Roosters v Wigan... in Australia?

That's about it so far I think.
