  • Who has the potential to make our greatest ever team?

Our team of the century was Fairfax, Mullins, DallyM, Brown, Lionel Cooper, Freddy, Viv Thicknesse, Artie, Sandy Pearce, Ray Stehr, Sid Pearce, Coote and Andy Norval, with Jack Beaton, Bunny Reilly, Jack Watkins and Horrie on the bench. Since 2000 I reckon its changed a bit, and think this team would get the general consensus:

    1 Anthony Minichiello
    2 Bill Mullins
    3 Dally Messenger
    4 Dave Brown
    5 ????Cooper. Maybe Schubert
    6 Brad Fittler
    7 Kevin Hastings
    8 Arthur Beetson
9 Sandy Pearce (a contentious position. I would have chosen Wing)
    10 Ray Stehr
    11 Sid Pearce
    12 Craig Fitzgibbon
    13 Ron Coote

    14 Adrian Morley
    15 Royce Ayliffe
    16 Andy Norval
17 Bunny Reilly (or Wing for the utility).

With Mini there already, is there any others from our current squad who will force their way into this team?

IMO RTS will claim the uncertain winger spot (or fullback with Mini moving there) in a few years time. Pearce maybe if he wins another couple of premierships, but at the moment he's behind Horrie and Monkey Mayes. JWH will get Ayliffe's reserve spot. One more season and SBW will cement himself as one of our second rowers. Everyone is high on Cordner's potential, but with Coote, SBW, Fitzy and Sid Pearce ahead of him it's hard to see him breaking through.

    Thoughts?

How the hell would anybody know? Like me, most guys on this site have only ever seen players from the 70's onwards. How could you compare Messenger to Jennings for instance. Pick a team from 1970 onwards and that might be half interesting. At least we would have seen all the guys play.

I have a feeling though, that Trent Robinson may give Jack Gibson a run for his money as our best ever coach within a few years time.

Well right now jenko would be no where near Messenger and it's not because I was around to watch daly play but from what is chronicled as well Jennings didn't have a great year. He can go missing from time to time or land his jet on a dime like he did in the GF. Jennings has lots to prove to be considered a great rooster in the centers.

If your saying since 2000, then I don't get how you replace Viv Thicknesse at no.7 with Horrie Hastings, given that Horrie's career was well and truly over at the time the Century Team was selected. Similarly bringing in Royce Ayliffe ?

If SBW were to be around for a lot longer than 2 years, then he would come into the equation, but don't think you can include someone who only plays a season or two. Even the Immortal Bob Fulton who played 3 or 4 seasons with us isn't included in the team.
Agree with Minichiello, but I can't really include anyone else from the >2000 sides atm, but perhaps by the end of their career, we might be possibly looking at someone like Boyd Cordner

Glad to have made you larf R2 but really...Jennings scored some good tries but over all in the team, there were other players that had more influence in the mission to being CHAMPIONS!!! I also think that Jennings has had better seasons at Penrith but not taking away what he did for us this year. Even Sterlo said that Jennings hadn't had a good year. Now don't tell me you don't respect his opinions? from what i've read, there are many here that think he is a good commentator. Anyway I think there is more that we need to see from Jennings before he can be a true great Rooster in his position. I think we will see much more from jenko in 14 but lets not make him a roosters great yet.

yes but bozos success was at manly and he came to us in the twilight of his career. Had we won a premiership with him, it may have influenced our opinion about him.

Sterlo's said all year that his move from Penrtih to here has done wonders for his career, he's scored more tries this season then any other, his defence has been better this season then any other, he's second for metre's (at the Roosters) and has 17 linebreaks this year.

He has hardly underperformed, he's had great year.

True...he had a bad 2012 which is why he was let go. I think there is more to jenko that we need to see and I think we will..
