Hi guys,
I've heard the whispers coming around with a new proper Reserve Grade coming back possibly.. I feel it's vital in Rugby League to nurture younger players and creating a more easier transaction into the NRL with the current gap too big. . I've had a few ideas and i am wondering if you feel they would work and throw in some idea's yourself:
For starters each NRL team has a Reserve grade team which can either be their own: Sydney Roosters Reserve Grade for example or simply adopt a team like Newtown Jets.
With the Salary cap in the NRL this year being 5.15 Million per team which comes down to an average of 206k per player and the lowest paid player being allowed 75k, i was thinking of introducing a smaller salary cap for the reserve grade:
- Each Reserve grade team has it's own Salary Cap of 800k for the 20 players which comes to an average of 40k per player.
- Make the maximum earning a player can earn 60k and the minimum 20k. (maximum 100k tops per player with bonuses - read below).
- On top of the 800k Salary cap allow a 100k extra earning for Club veterans/Club Legends to earn who can no longer compete at the top level but still provide experience and help the younger players come through but must have played a minimum 50 first-grade games for the club - The 100k bonus can be distributed between 3 players tops. (The top maximum earning of 70k doesn't include this,). Imagine an Adrian Morley coming back for a year or two getting paid just enough money to help the younger players develop!!
- Players in the Top 25 who aren't part of the top 17 can also play in this competition.
- Replace the Reserve Grade comp as the curtain raiser to FG NRL matches. Move the Holden Cup to a Wednesday or something, I know i'd go earlier just to watch a roosters game featuring Adrian Morley followed by the big one!!
So that's my small idea. Anyone else think this could work and/or could expand on it? I also feel that it would help balance the salary cap because with most of the players being paid some money they won't really need to have those pay per appearances in FG if you aren't in the top 25 - or at least a smaller amount. It could also help players coming back from Long-Term injuries e.g. TauTau Moga. It will help him build up his confidence and over-come his injuries and playing at a higher intensity which is closer to FG. It would allow more earning in Rugby League for more players which would probably motivate them a bit more and last but not least we could use Jason Taylor to coach - it would be beneficial for him and other coaches looking for an opportunity.
