I may have been seeing things but I can't help feeling that Lyon took a dive rather than be tackled. No way Aubison would have stopped lyon from getting to that ball with the momentum he had. Could be the camera angle but after watching it over and over again after I got home from the game im convinsed of it.

Maubs thought it was going to be a certain try. Otherwise he wouldn't have tackled him.

If Maubbs wouldn't of put his hands(because in my opinion he didn't grab much) on JL, he would have over ranned the ball. The ball's speed had changed with the bounce. That's why JL then pretended to be tackled and put his hands up in the air. Lyons is nearly as bad as Greg Bird in acting to get a penalty.

Thats what I thought at the time as well. However they ended up scoring another try just after this penalty try as well - we might've rallied to conceded only one try had they been given a penalty and Maubs 10 in the bin.

I never liked jl. He try'd the same shit when he attemted to contest a high ball with Toupo . He knew he couldn't out leap Toupo and took another dive.

Yeah, that's the issue I had with it too. I thought the offence HAD TO take place in the in goal for a penalty try to be awarded.

I was sitting right in that corner where it happened. To me it looked like Maubs was trying for the ball but because JL was in front of him he put his hands on him and right at the moment the ball bounces to the left so Maubs couldn't see it and had no idea if JL had the ball in his hands so he took him down. On the replay it shows that JL had over-run it and the ball had bounced to his left so even if he wasn't tackled he would have had to stop and try pick it up and then dive over for the try, in that time he could have knocked it on or been tackled but seeing as Mortimer came through there is also a chance that Mortimer could have tackled him or regathered before JL got to it. It should have just been a penalty IMO, the fact that they got a gift 6 pointer and then scored again while we were shell-shocked yet we managed to come back and win makes the victory more remarkable and so much sweeter.

Looked like a clear cut penalty try to me.

The rule states that the referee simply has to be of the opinion that if not for the offending behaviour a try would have been scored. Ball was rolling into the ingoal with Lyon clearly winning the race to it. Yes Lyon made a meal of the contact by throwing his arms up etc, but the offence still occurred.

If I were Lyon's coach though I'd have a serious word with him about going for the bloody ball though and not trying to ham it up for the penalty. In this case he got the decision so no harm no foul, but penalty tries are hard to come by in league so it was no certainty to be awarded.

I mean FFS for all his theatrics he still landed right next to the ball, so if he'd just stayed focused on it he'd have come down right on top of it with his hands easily.

The thing that i have been thowing at the Manly supporters here at work all day (as well as others supporters who were supporting the Gulls) is the fact that if Lyons try was a penalty try , why wasnt Toups try a 8 pointer ? ( this is the best part) The silly dopes dont really know the rules, I tell them Toups was tackled mid air by Stewart and that even though he scored, it should have ALSO been a penalty to the Chooks (8 point try) and the Manly supporters all go quite and mummble and walk away. The fact is that it was all fair as the defender CAN tackle the attacker in the air..or so i believe ? Thats the fun part as they dont know the rules...PLUS we won anyway!

I reckon Lyon milked it for all it was worth and luckily for him the penalty try was awarded because I think he bombed a try. If he didn't take the dive I think he would have scored ... the ball was there for him to dive on.
