Loved the game, congrats to the team for an awesome season and a great win on Sunday.
Now that we have won a premiership there is sure to be a fallout over the next few seasons as many of our players will be worth more and other clubs will be poaching our players. I hope our club has a good think about who they want to retain and who they will let go.
SBW leaving (if he does) could be a blessing in disguise as we can use this free cash to help retain more of our roster for longer...Here are my thoughts on some of the players going forward;
Players we must sign up for life;
1. RTS - Under some mentoring can be brilliant! Hopefully Mini stays around to teach him.
7. Pearce - Solid without being brilliant, can provide a solid foundation for our team especially with Maloney there
9. Friend - Is getting better and better. Will replace Smith for QLD and Aust, we need to sign him up long term now!
10. JWH - With Cordner he will lead our forwards around the field for years to come
13. Cordner - A leader of the forwards and a superstar.
These are the core of our team and can provide us with a successful decade if we sign them up long term. Look at what the Storm did with Slater, Cronk and Smith...I think we can do something similar with this spine. The exciting thing is these guys are all very young!
Remember Evans and Moga will also be coming through in the next few seasons and will be asking lots of money very soon.
Unfortunately with the success our team is likely to have and has had, we will lose players...I would love to keep the whole team, but these are the guys that would be on the list to go;
1. Mini - obviously will be going soon, but it will be good to have some $$$ freed up to invest in other players
2. Toups - brilliant, future superstar, but will command too much money in 2-3 years time
4. SKD - great GF but is overpaid for what he does on the field. Mogo will hopefully fill his position in 2 years time
8. Moa - only keep him if he is on minimal wage...
12. SBW - would love him to stay, but by letting him go will allow us to retain our youngsters
14. Mortimer - Will be sought after once he comes off contract and will jump at the chance to start
15. LOD - Only a year or so left in him, so again he will free up some $$$
Dont be offended by what I have to say, this is just my opinion. This is how I see we can keep our young superstars together for the next 5 or so years.
