They might not have set NSW alight during State of Origin, but Sydney Roosters halves James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce showed they can deliver on the big stage in Friday's NRL minor premiership decider.

Together with star forward Sonny Bill Williams, the halves were the major architects of the Roosters' 24-12 win in front of a record NRL regular season crowd of 59,708 at ANZ Stadium.

With the Roosters trailing 12-10 at the break, their halves stepped up big time scoring all 14 of their team's second-half points.

Maloney scored two of the Roosters' four tries, with partner-in-crime Pearce delivering beautifully judged passes for both.

Pearce wouldn't be denied his share of the tryscoring glory, but got a massive helping hand for his four-pointer with Williams busting the Rabbitohs' defence before sending the halfback under the posts.

Williams was instrumental in the Roosters' first try, scored by Maloney, even though he didn't handle the ball.

Pearce used Williams as a decoy in a second-man play, with Maloney racing through a gap to score.

When the Roosters needed inspiration in the second half, it was Maloney who provided the spark.

He made a big break from his own in-goal area after fielding a Luke Keary kick and then stretched out over the line a few second later for the go-ahead try.

Pearce's try put the icing on a particularly tasty cake, as Williams completed a superb individual performance after the ignominy of being shoved away by Greg Inglis when the fullback scored the first try of the game.

Maloney kicked four from five to finish with a 16-point haul.

Pearce and Maloney clearly outshone Souths counterparts John Sutton and Adam Reynolds - who have been mooted to replace the Roosters pair as the Blues' halves in 2014 - who struggled to deliver effective last-tackle plays.

agreed. Sutton looked much more likely with ball in hand than Reynolds. But both came up with poor last tackle options.
It's scientifically impossible for Easts to be in Souths' shadow when there's daylight between them and us.
        Easts to win

Even during our round 1 loss to the South Sydney Rabbitohs our halves played exceptionally well all night long and restricted the impact of Greg Inglis by kicking deep in to the corners which is the cornerstone of their game as he is the strongest kick returner in the game of rugby league. That night however our forwards did not complete the job after the 20 minute mark and we were easily defeat.

Last night our halves played the very same game except for this match our forwards were dominant from the opening kick off until the full time siren. Once again our halves were able to nullify the threat of Greg Inglis and restrict South Sydney's territory and only silly penalties kept South's in with possession and territory.

It is very telling that some members of our fan base have not congratulated Mitchell Pearce on a superb match and one absentee is very much noted. Young Pearce is a champion player who has been unfairly bashed from pillar to post by sections of his own base and I hope that he continues to silence these pathetic agenda driven critics.

So happy for Pearce. I know many here are still to be convinced, but as far as I'm concerned he has already developed into a great leader. So many big games at such at such a young age, when he reaches his peak we will be looking at a true champion... just like his dad. Maloney just shaded SBW as MOM in my opinion but both those players came up with some astonishing plays under pressure. SBW is looking to end with a bang. His legacy will be measured by the example he has set to our young guys. Vital that we keep the core of this team together. As a club, we all took a huge step forward last night. Australia was watching and the Roosters stepped up. The chookpen was awesome. If anything is going to convince SBW to stay, it's a packed stadium. Trent Robinson is The Eggfathers man of the year. The recruitment team did a great job initially buying all the parts but Robinson is the one who built the Hot-Rod and she flies

Did anyone hear that knob Kimmorley come out and say we couldn't win the comp with our halves last week?

He'd have to be the biggest **** in the media. I've hated him ever since he reneged on a deal to sign with us in 2001.
