  • Bargain Buys...

Just a thought, considering there is real strength in a few of our youngsters (cordner, leilua, williamson, blair, symonds etc) and due to the constraints of the salary cap, smarter buys are I think where we need to be looking. Cudos so far to osullivan who has been following this formula since coming in charge and imo, he has made the correct decisions from the outset for us. Here are a couple more suggestions, Nick Kenny and Josh Miller. These two far from stick out and are extremely underrated imo. Both put their bodies on the line week in week out and have a really good go. Both would be inexpensive purchases and judging by their performances and stats, both would be welcome additions to our side. We need some resolve in our pack and these 2 are seasoned campaigners (both 27 this year) who are really really tough and aggressive.

Throw in the likes of kade snowden who has a lot of jason cayless about him and has had an extremely impressive year. The other young prop who is extremley impressive is aiden tolman who is one of osullivans recruits when he was at melbourne and would not be out of place in our side by any stretch. In terms of backrowers - an experienced one in the workhorse mold is what we need to replace fitzy short-term till cordner is ready to step up, there arent too many options tbh. The best options would be either odonnell, heighington or waterhouse. Heighington re-signed last year i think so he is out of the equation but maybe waterhouse would come for pretty good value considering the backrow depth penrith have.

Although we have plenty of good fullbacks (mini, pez) I cant help but also go past kevin locke. He is behind mckinnon at the warriors and I think he could give our backline plenty and again, not command ridiculous wage demands because of his inexperience and age. As early as it is to tell, imo he has the potential to be better than pez - his stats already show a bloke that breaks plenty of tackles (like pez), makes plenty of linebreaks, kicks goals, scores trys, makes heaps of metres and his support play and instictual play from fullback is a little better than pez as well as being extremely fast - something our backline is lacking. He also has very good ball playing skills which is almost a prerequisite these days to being a top quality fullback so I wouldnt mind throwing him into the mix as well so that when mini retires, our back 3 can consist of graham on one wing and then locke and perrett battling out for the fullback role with the latter pushed onto the wing or in perretts case, maybe even into the centres.

What would you blokes say if you saw a side like this take the field:
    1. Locke
    2. Graham
    3. Maubs
    4. Williamson
    5. Perrett
    6. Carney
    7. Pearce
    8. Kenny
    9. Friend
    10. FPN
    11. Myles
    12. Waterhouse
    13. Miller

    14. Paea
    15. Snowden
    16. Symonds
    17. Jones

This side is without mini, mase and braith. Dont get me wrong, im not suggesting that we need to recruit this side exactly but im just trying to demonstrate what a few smart buys could do to our side. IMO thats not a bad side. An uncompromising pack and a pretty solid backline with two defensively strong centres and speed and strike power outwide. Experience off the bench is my only qualm with this side and our side which is why I believe that mason should play almost exclusively from the bench in 2010 along with paea as both can bring some leadership and experince onto the park.

As far as I am concerned, Graham is a bargain buy, but remember that most of the names you mentioned are rated very highly by their club.

Snowden and Kenny are seen as the future top frontrowers at their club, so I very much doubt the Sharks or Broncos respectively would let these blokes go for cheap. Likewise, both Kevin Locke and Trent Waterhouse are seen as long-term prospects with key roles in their teams too, with Locke most likely to be the long-term fullback/wing for Warriors for years to come, and Waterhouse pretty much being the cornerstone of the Panthers pack, much like Fitzgibbon was our very own. The same can be said for Heighington.

O'Donnell is a solid player, but he is not getting any younger, has plenty of injuries, and would also be very expensive.

To me, a bargain buy would be a solid, mid-range first grader with obvious potential for more, who has enough experience without being a vital cog in their teams lineup, who hasn't played any rep footy yet but would revel in a role requiring more responsibility at our club. Someone like Michael Gordon, Joel Reddy, Ben Farrar or John Williams in the outside backs, and someone like Josh Miller, Gary Warburton, Nigel Plum or Nathan Smith in the forwards. Their roles would be suited to our team, and that is all that we would need.

There are fantasy league competitions for this type of thing...., when you just pick a team from all 16 clubs...

All the players you have mentioned roz are except for Snowden unsure, Tolman 1 year are tied too there clubs for 2 or 3 more seasons. So it is utterly pointless considering them as they are valued by their clubs and unavailable.

Smith has done what we need.

He has decided to build the team using the players we already have, that regardless of what a lot of fans on here think, have doubtless potential just waiting to be realized. Then, he has identified the areas that we are lacking depth in (front row = O'Meley's departure, centre = Soliola's departure, backrow = Fitzgibbon's departure) and has signed players both experienced and younger to cover these positions.

Front row = Ryles and Waerea-Hargreaves

          Centre = Graham and Linnett

          Backrow = Conn and Baiteri

              Phil Graham is a winger.

Blood some youngsters in the centres and keep wingers where they should be.

Smart thinking! This season we relied on about 5 high profile players to do all the work... to win I think we really need a team that works with or without them (unstoppable with them, and bloody strong without them.)

im just trying to demonstrate a point not saying that this is what we should do. It is players like this that we need that wont break the bank but whose values are felt just as much as those on double their salaries. The thing is that players in this more experienced bracket are what we need as we have some really top draw youngsters who are currently around the 18 years old mark which means they are at least a couple of years off therefore some blokes to be recruited who give our pack a seasoned look (miller, kenny, waterhouse etc) would not only mean that we arent throwing money down the drain, but it would mean that by the time they are more or less ready to move on - england, retirement or elsewhere, we have the troops coming through to replace them

Two players that we should make a definite play for are Michael Gordon from Penrith and Nick Kenny from the Broncos. These two would be my priority signings. Kenny is just a monster, for anybody that saw him play last weekend he was the demolition man. He is exactly what we need up front, a no nonsense type of player who gets the done done. Gordon would be a great addition to our side and I'd probably like to play him in the centres. He is very elusive and very strong for a bloke his size. He has great footwork and can kick goals. I wouldn't imagine he'd come too expensively to us but he has a tonne of speed.

i agree whole heartedly with both of those comments. Gordon is acutally able to play centres, wing and fullback and i am one of his biggest fans for sure. Kenny likewise and I will reiterate miller as I think this bloke could offer our side heaps. Is versatile, is the toughest bloke I have ever seen, is aggressive and does all the dirty work. Against us he took on omeley and against the dragons he was the primary destroyer. Sign up these three for sure

Totally agree about Josh Miller. I remember he destroyed the entire Dragons pack on his own. How old is he though? He looks 40.

same age as nick kenny (27 in 2009). He is not too big (99kgs and about 180cms) but can play prop, lock and backrow and puts in all day everyday - every side needs a bloke like this. Manly built a premiership on the back of these sorts of reject players - hall, perry etc
