  • O'Meley & Fitz

Hi guys, writing from the UK - we have signed these two for next year and was wondering what we can expect. I know Fitz has had quite a strong season and should do well for a year over here, but what about O'Meley??

    Any help would be appreciated!!

Also - We got Jordan Tansey from you too, and he is showing some good signs as well!

Craig Fitzgibbon is the best thing since sliced bread. Maybe even better than sliced bread. Ogre is a good bloke, a family man who plays hard, should be much better suited to the English game than Australian. Both are great guys and great players, will be a huge asset to the club. We'll miss them, especially Capt'n Fitz

My knowledge of Super League is limited, but doing a comparison of them with the players who made the 2009 Super League Dream Team in their positions,i would say O'meley will be average, while Fitzy should go very well..

The props in the 2009 Super League Dream Team are Morley & Jamie Peacock.O'Meley is nowhere near the force Mozz still is,& i haven't seen enough of Peacock to make and informed comparison..

The locks/2nd Rowers in the Dream Team are Ben Galea,Clint Newton & Kevin Sinfield.Don't know enough about Sinfield to comment, but Fitzy has the other 2 covered..Fitzy played for the kangaroos in the '08 World Cup,and with Sam Perrett, was our best playerthis season..

Tansey was exposed as being well short of NRL level in his limited game time..

        thanks for the input.

From what I have seen of O'Meley in the past he looks to drive it in hard and gets good go forward, and can offload too, or is that not part of his game anymore?

His game is still the same,he was struggling with the pace of the game here..

And his lateral movement in defence was just about non-existant..

          He is also injury prone..

If he is going to a team with a good young pack,he should be a good asset..in a mentoring role,if nothing else..

My personal opinion is that i am glad he has left the club, because the game here was way too fast for Shrek..

he had limited opportunities really with the roosters. but he has a wealth of experience, and i think his leadership alone is a great asset. at the end of the day, when our boys were our with rep games, the club looked to Ogre, and he delivered. he certainly didn't live up to the hype of old, and imo it was a combination of a crappy team, changes to the refereeing and just being generally unhappy with the coach. I think Ogre will come good.

has the pace increased due to the introduction of two referees?

He has quite an experience pack around him next year to be honest:

              Cusack
              Berrigan
              O'Meley
              Fitzgibbon
              Manu
              Lauaki

and then some young props and back rowers

Yes the 2 refs increased the pace of the game..

That Front Row looks okay..Cusack (The Yakk) is a club legend in my eyes, and i always had a big opinion of Berrigan..

Fitzy - champion - will tear it up in the ESL and you guys will come to love him as much as many of us do here
O'Meley - past his best - the ESL may suit him better and by the sounds of that pack of Hull's, he should go OK

Phil Gould's take of the English Super League was perfect "it's Australian park football at best" It's a game of throw the ball around and make a lot of mistakes. Fitzgibbon does'nt deserve to play in that crap, but Mark O'meley will fit in well.

Fitzy should be a Rooster for at least another year.

O'Meley is now a pea-heart. He got punched in the head this year (or was it last) and did NOTHING. Just like his football this year....NOTHING

Fitzy still has a lot to offer. plays hard every game. Champion.

yep.. Fat, slow and useless.. Limited opportunities was because he did absolutely nothing when on the park.. Fitzy will kill it over there...

I find it difficult to describe "pace"...
2 refs... I think has slowed the game down technically. There's more penalties for things like scragging the ball, its led to a lot of nitpicking and hasn't really resulted in less usage of the video ref (which always seems to go against the Roosters... but that's our fault.)

Lots of teams who haven't caught up with playing 2 refs yet (again... Roosters are a big example) just look flat and lethargic. Many games seem to be dictated by the refs... not saying they're making the wrong calls... but you see lots of situations where just as the Roosters are getting a go, the ref will notice some small fumble or something and the ball will go the other way, leading to a try. 99% of these situations are caused by a player being given a big wrestling/grapple tackle (which just totally slow the game down) and then being shoulder charged by a defender before he's technically "held".

I think the definition of "held" should be changed if they wanna speed up the game, because making the tackling rules too technical (and now employing 2 refs to decide on the interpretation of the technicalities each season... although only 1 can blow the whistle) just slows things down too much.

                            ---

That said... its changed the flow. I'd say lots of players have struggled with the new flow because what used to make them good is now defined as cheating... so they've sorta lost their secret weapons... rather than scoring tries off sly scrapes or obstructions that rarely get picked up, they're giving the ball to the opposition (who are scoring tries as a result, making them look stupid.)

Teams like the Dogs have SMASHED it this season because it suits their style of play... I call it bullyboy League... lotsa grabbing, charging and roughing up the man, but going nowhere near the ball! Makes for pretty slow footy, where you don't necessarily see as much running, or fancy manoeuvres... but it suits the rules.

So the flow is... different... more honest for some players maybe?
                            Speed... I think is slower...

Both O'Meley and Fitzy will give their all each and every week.

And both players put the team before their own individual ambitions.

O'Meley was Fittler's scapegoat in 09 - and his confidence and performances suffered as a result, unsurprisingly. In a more positive environment, he will be an asset to any side.
