Politis must go: Smith and Carney are crazy appointments

Nick Politis, The Roosters chairman, must resign with immediate effect before the club implodes completely.

In April this year, I submitted an article to the Roar calling for Politis to take responsibility for the situation at Bondi and step aside.

History shows he did not take that advice and proceeded to make decisions that have further damaged this once great club.

Since April, Soward has gone on to the dizzy heights of the minor premiership and third in the Dally M Awards.

The club has had continuing on field capitulation and off field litigation that, combined, earned them the wooden spoon.

Chairmen make decisions that have massive ramifications over long periods of time. Politis is no different.

Politis’ long term decisions have been to hire Brian Smith who has never won a Premiership ahead of John Lang, Steve Folkes, Michael Hagan or several others who have won premierships and are available.

Smith was at best, a moderately effective, but ultimately unsuccessful coach at St George/Illawarra, Parramatta and the Knights.

Then Politis compounded this by signing Smith for four seasons. Politis then announced the already poorly kept secret that Todd Carney had been signed to lead the resurgence in 2010.

Carney, currently banned by the NSW Police from entering his home town of Goulburn, is a huge risk as a player. Politis has taken it further by risking the whole team’s performance and hence the 2010 season on his fragile and arguably flawed personality, as evidenced by his off field rap sheet.

Politis has again demonstrated that he is not up to the massive task of turning around the Roosters.

Clearly, he prefers short cuts and band-aid decisions that ignore the fundamentals of running a successful sporting club.

The fundamentals he has ignored include the “no dickheads policy”, a proven and successful approach and the failure to build from within by sourcing and developing juniors.

What will it take for him to do the honourable thing and step aside?

          1. Soward was let go 2 years ago, get over it. The club had a decision to make weather to have Finch, Lewis, Soward or Pearce as our long term half and after dwelling on this decision for a while it was decided that Pearce was the best prospect. I am a massive fan of Soward and loved watching him progress through the ranks, but Pearce is the future of the club and puts in 110% every game. Remember he was still eligible for u20's this year.

          2. The players didn't respect Freddie, they're misbehaving had nothing to do with Politis. He cant stop players from acting like idiots before it happens, he can only act afterwards.

          3. Brian Smith is the only one of those coaching NRL at current under the new rules and officiating and you want either someone not coaching at all or coming from England. I recall our last 2 coaches we're from those predicaments (worked well then). So Politis has gone back to the drawing board and picked someone with plenty of experience who players respect.

          4. St George (92,93) lost to a Broncos team that could be one of the best that there was. Parra (2001) lost to a team being lead around by the best player the game has seen. And has taken Newcastle from a team that could barely win a game without Johns and Buderus to a Finals team again

          5. Tell me when does a guy deserve a 2nd chance. His been working at a local pub the whole time. Hes been belted and not retaliated knowing it will cost him his job. The guy has stayed out of the limelight the whole time his been there and his carving up for Atherton.

          6. Juniors - Mini, Pez, Maubs, Jaubs, Cherro, Sa, Friend, Earl, Pearce, FPN, Paea, Symonds, Waqa, Jones, SKD, Kennedy. All come through our ranks and made their debuts with us.

It all comes down to results and success at the end of the day. I wonder just who people would like to KEEP? That would be a far shorter list than those that have to go. Then the question comes back as to who we replace those that leave. So let's have it.

Who replaces Nick? Who will put in the millions of dollars he has invested in the club instead of Nick? What happens if he DOES step aside and then no one fills his shoes?

No good in saying you don't know as you seem to have all the solutions in regards to direction the club needs to take.

Players have a say in their future. The club does not own them and cannot dictate to them if they should stay and where thy should play. If we kept every player that went on to become a better player at another club, we would not have any room under the salary cap.

I am looking forward to 2010. Teams have their ups and downs and this is our down. I don't have a crystal ball but I can tell you that there is only one direction we can go from here.

I am not decided on Smith but he is a good coach which is miles ahead what we have recently had. As for Carney, I think it is dangerous but I have faith that the club has enough conditions in his contract that will encourage him to pull his head in.

Isn't it the boards and management's role to source funds to make the club a viable entity?

If they have not done so causing the chairman to put his own money as you allude he does, then they have failed miserably in their roles.

Last time I checked, the club was not privately owned by Politis

History will probably also show he didn't read your advice nor has a clue who you are.

While I do not like Politis and do not like what he is doing to the club now, I do respect what he has done and realise that this club still exists because of him.

I would also not post some article to some tinpot internet site then expect Politis to resign on the basis of it.

I suppose you are too young to remember "City Ford" as the first ever club sponsor in league and our long term sponsor.Guess who owns that business?
Near every NRL club are running in the red,so is every clubs board failing miserably,or could it possibly be that there are not enough business` prepared to put enough money into NRL clubs to see them run at a profit?

Nick was sponsoring the club before he had any managerial responsibility. I'm not denigrating his contribution to the club and the club should always be indebted to him for that contribution. However, his past contribution does not mean he is immune from criticism

There is a difference between sponsorship and funding a club with your own money. The roosters is not a privately owned club in the sense that Politis owns it. If money needs to be poured in, it will come from the leagues club and other revenue sources, not Politis' bank account. Football clubs are a slightly different beast in that the leagues club grants usually balance the equation. If you think that Politis tips into his own pocket to balance the books, then you're misguided IMO.

The boards are responsible for revenue streams to a club. If they fail in that regard, then yes they are failing in their duties. If you think a board who operates a business in the red, continuously, is doing a good job, then I'm glad I don't have you sitting on any board of companies for which I have shares

The notion that the club won't exist if Politis is not Chairman is a myth in my opinion. Good governance will ensure its survival.
