Politis must go: Smith and Carney are crazy appointments
Nick Politis, The Roosters chairman, must resign with immediate effect before the club implodes completely.
In April this year, I submitted an article to the Roar calling for Politis to take responsibility for the situation at Bondi and step aside.
History shows he did not take that advice and proceeded to make decisions that have further damaged this once great club.
Since April, Soward has gone on to the dizzy heights of the minor premiership and third in the Dally M Awards.
The club has had continuing on field capitulation and off field litigation that, combined, earned them the wooden spoon.
Chairmen make decisions that have massive ramifications over long periods of time. Politis is no different.
Politis’ long term decisions have been to hire Brian Smith who has never won a Premiership ahead of John Lang, Steve Folkes, Michael Hagan or several others who have won premierships and are available.
Smith was at best, a moderately effective, but ultimately unsuccessful coach at St George/Illawarra, Parramatta and the Knights.
Then Politis compounded this by signing Smith for four seasons. Politis then announced the already poorly kept secret that Todd Carney had been signed to lead the resurgence in 2010.
Carney, currently banned by the NSW Police from entering his home town of Goulburn, is a huge risk as a player. Politis has taken it further by risking the whole team’s performance and hence the 2010 season on his fragile and arguably flawed personality, as evidenced by his off field rap sheet.
Politis has again demonstrated that he is not up to the massive task of turning around the Roosters.
Clearly, he prefers short cuts and band-aid decisions that ignore the fundamentals of running a successful sporting club.
The fundamentals he has ignored include the “no dickheads policy”, a proven and successful approach and the failure to build from within by sourcing and developing juniors.
What will it take for him to do the honourable thing and step aside?
