  • Brian Smith Blog: Sonny at Five Eighth?

"While we are on the Roosters I reckon all footy fans could be in for a treat in round 15. Not only is it Bulldogs v Roosters homecoming for Sonny Bill but I reckon we might all get to see SBW in a fantastic new role – at FIVE EIGHTH.

With Maloney and Pearce in Origin. During 2012 when the prospect of SBW joining the Roosters was raised, Peter O’Sullivan (Roosters recruitment manager) and I discussed the possibility of playing SBW at five-eighth.

When I have spoken with people in the coaching ranks of Super 15s rugby in my work with the Brumbies this season and asked about SBW, some of the responses have been so glowing as to suggest that he changed the expectations of what a centre could do during his time in RU.

What he can bring to that key position in RL could be ground breaking. That skill set in that frame and with some width and depth to receive lots of passes from Daniel Mortimer at half could well be mouth-watering.

SBW might just get the opportunity to show us what could be – and our brand of footy might change as a result."

I think if Langi is fit he will be the one to wear the 6.

Maybe SBW and Langi can alternate between 2nd row and 5/8?

Only issue there is kicking. If Mortimer is the only proper kicking option it's easy to shut down.

I'm not confident in his kicking game at all.

Although it must be said, it is miles better this season than previous, admittedly though he was starting off a very low base.

I don't see why not. We have depth in the forwards. Moa coming back, Tasi still trying to get back into first grade, Evans and Napa on the fringes.

If Langi is out, simply throw SBW into the halves, Guerra to start, and bring in Moa, Tasi, Evans or Napa onto the bench. Seems pretty straightforward.

I'm beginning to miss Brian Smith just a little. Not his coaching, just that mind****ing that he does. Still, Sbw can do anything. Even be Freddy.
                  SUPER DRAGON!

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I still stand by what I said, miles better than previous seasons!

He has developed an awesome grubber kick this year, so good it makes Pearce green with envy.
                          Comment of the year:
