Neither. Have another look. It doesn't matter which way he faces. The ball goes backwards towards his own dead ball line before it bounces. If the initial direction was back, it can then bounce in any direction.
The problem is the commentators and fans don't always know the rules. I used to referee in souths juniors a long time ago. The refs were not great but they got this one right.

All i can say is that thank god you gave away refereeing, there are enough incompetents out there already.

Funny thing is I was watching the footy show this morning & the look on Slaters face when he asked about th incident said it all. His response was very sheepish. But what would he know?
