  • New tactic to avoid penalties?

I noticed against Manly that our players are now dragging team mates out of tackles, presumably to avoid being held down by the player who has been tackled.

Not that it's working that well... Despite our physical dominance of a number of opponents and improved discipline in all other parts of the game, we've only won the penalties twice (each by 1 penalty).

It's almost as if we're afraid of being pinged for holding the player down for too long - can't say I blame the players based on the penalties against us over the last few years. Rooster_6 may have it right, wear Souths jerseys, or Melbourne, or.........

You are spot on. Watch the first 10 minutes of the game and you will see whoever is in the tackle with Marty Kennedy dragging him up and off each tackle. Its a bloody good idea if it is planned coz I don't think Marty gave 1 away on Monday night, which would just about be a first.

I don't see why this seems to be a brilliant master plan, I love robbo as a coach but I was doing this in my junior days.

Just on penalties for holding down etc in the tackle....who else thought that Jennings was hard done by the other night?
Was pinged for not clearing the ruck area....he was being held in mid air, on the tackled players back, when the Manly player was getting up. How the faark are you supposed to clear the ruck when you can't even get your feet on the ground?

              Am I just being biased?

That's never been know to happen before

Actually, in round 1, 2, 3, 6 and now 9 he hasn't given any penalties. Surprising lol. Only 6 penalties this season.

Does the drag n drop on Marty count as a tackle in their stats?

I can't wait until refs start penalising the real problem in the ruck. That being the tackled player walking 1-2 metres forward over the original mark.

i always thought walking off the mark warranted a penalty, an old qld ploy!

That's right but kudos to Robbo for going back to basics and imploring them to do so. Watch the other teams start doing it now on.
Another thing that we were taught to do as juniors & Robbo has our wingers doing, is dropping deep & contesting the penalty sideline kick. Worked a treat for us late in the game when Cherry-Evans tried to be too ambitious although we missed a similar opportunity earlier on because Toups didn't drop back.

Some teams regularly make 10 to 15 metres a set using this ploy and I wonder how the league allows it to happen, the most ridiculous part of this is that defending teams have been penalised by the ref's while trying stand their ground on the mark and the attacker playing the ball push forward off the mark and claim they are being interfered with and the fool ref's fall for it.

Has been going on for years, the perfect tackle is at least 3 men in, the last man is the first out, he gets back to A and the next players pulls the last player up out of the tackle.
