  • Daley insists Pearce will be NSW halfback.

NSW coach Laurie Daley has maintained Mitchell Pearce will be the Blues halfback despite Adam Reynolds' fine display in Sunday's City-Country clash in Coffs Harbour.

Reynolds scored a try and produced yet another classy kicking performance on his representative debut for City, despite finishing on the losing side as Country sealed a 18-12 victory.

The South Sydney halfback kicked two 40-20s, produced an outrageous kick into the goalpost pads that almost led to a try, then released Michael Jennings for a 60m run following an audacious short goal-line drop-out kick.

Daley said he was impressed with how Reynolds coped on the big stage in only his second NRL season, but insists Pearce will be wearing the No.7 jersey on June 5 in Sydney.

"Adam was terrific for a young guy," Daley said.

"It was a step up in class. He got better as the game went on and it was good to know he can cope.

"At this stage he continues to develop and he's not been disheartened by the fact Mitch will be the halfback. But he is going well at this stage."

Daley said Reynolds' display has moved him up the pecking order behind Pearce and would be the first option should the Sydney Roosters star be unavailable, but that he should be allowed to keep developing.

"He's confident and you think he is learning all the time. He would be a guy you have to consider," he said.

"It's just good to know in a short space of time he come on. But he did some good things and some poor things.

"He's 22, has a big future but doesn't need the burden yet of being the playmaker for NSW."

James Maloney was solid for Country but said he was unsure if he'd done enough to edge out Todd Carney for the Blues' five-eighth spot.

"I thought a couple of kicks at important times, I didn't put on the mark," Maloney said.

"I thought the ruck was pretty slow to be honest and pretty ragged. It made it into a bit of a slugfest.

"That was pretty disappointing. we didn't get to play the free-flowing game we would've liked.

"I was happy with some things but some other things needed a bit of polish."

Maloney's cause would have been helped by a brilliant try-saving tackle on City's Nathan Peats in the second-half and Country coach Trent Barrett said the Sydney Roosters playmaker had the right temperament for Origin.

"I thought he did well. In the first half he controlled things pretty well and was pushing up around the ruck and taking the line on," Barrett said.

"In the second half he came up with a great try-saving tackle too. He's got the right personality for big games."

Country won the game thanks to tries from Canberra's Josh McCrone and Newcastle pair Akuila Uate and James McManus in front of a disappointing record low crowd of 4,645.

Not sure why this game is continually thought of as a 'step up in class'. I reckon most club sides would have beaten both sides today.

Jimmy was really poor today, split halves just doesn't suit him. Jenko was also pretty poor but to be fair he barely saw any quality ball from the halves which was disappointing for him, looked like he was getting frustrated and ended up making a few errors. Hopefully both boys are fit for Anzac day, they both went down at stages of the game. It's a very short turn around for two crucial players of ours.

True I forgot about Cordner, played very well. Made good metres playing in tight all game and tackled very strongly. He's made for origin, just probably not for a couple more years.

Shame he didn't get hit more often from his playmakers because he was running some great lines, the one where Ennis put in a grubber for Idris was the perfect example; if he hits Cordner he most likely crashes over for a try.

I like him on the fringes more than I do at lock for us.

If I remember correctly, Pearce was the stand out in the city/country game last year.

            As was BJ.

As R6 said, most NRL sides would beat either of those sides yesterday.

I thought Reynolds had some standout moments but I really thought he looked tentative, particularly in the first half - this is in an atmosphere that more resembled Henson Park than Lang Park. I suspect his time will come but right now he is a young half playing a very structured role for his club - he is not ready.

I thought Maloney was average but from listending to a bunch of interviews yesterday, it sounds like Daley's view on 5/8 is Carney if he is ready, Bird if not.

At the end of the day Pearce & Reynolds are both very good players but IMO Reynolds is better. It's taken Pearce 7 years to get to where he is now where Reynolds has been up to a high standard of FG from day 1.

Reynolds ability can only be overlooked for so long, he will get his turn.

But for now it's Pearce who has the gig with NSW & I hope he plays a high standard of footy & lets Maloney take the 5th tackle option.

Reynolds has had the go forward. The attack and the back line with him since day 1 so it's been easy to look good.

Pearce has never had any of that since his debut... Give him the support Reynolds has and Pearce will outshine him I think.

Mate, Pearce had the Dally M player of the year outside of him Reynolds has never had that. Pearce had the best centre in the game in 2010 outside of him Reynolds has never had that. Pearce played behind internationals like Myles, Ryles, FPN, JWH & Fitzy. He had played along side of internationals in Mini & Anasta so dont think Pearce hasn't had support.

I wish Pearce all the best but IMO it's only a matter of time before Reynolds gets his chance.

Give me Sam Williams, Tyrone Roberts and Aiden Sezer all before Adam Reynolds as future NSW halves please.

All far more complete packages imo.

And where did PearceOrf help take the team when it had weapons???

Reynolds has had the luxury of one of the best packs in the game to play off and a bloke called Inglis to hit.

Luxuries PearceOrf is only seeing now, this season.

Sure Reynolds looks the goods, no one is denying that. But up against that QLD side there is no where to hide. IMO it would be a massive mistake to stick him into Origin this year. Remember there are better 1/2s like DCE that can't even get a run in the QLD side.

                            The FlogPen .

                            You know it makes sense.

Mate I never mentioned having Reynolds replace Pearce for this years SOO all I said was that IMO it is only a matter of time before Reynolds gets the gig.

I have no disliking of Pearce, Im not saying get rid of Pearce or lets get Reynolds I was just giving who ever I replied to some information that they may have overlooked.

Alot of people rate internationals like who I mentioned as pretty good players & Pearce has played with that calibre of player at the Roosters since he has been there. The team fired in 2010 with Carney at the helm & most predicted they would win the comp in 2011 when Carney stalled Pearce did nothing, so realistically he has had 1 good season like the rest of them did on the back of Carney. He has been in losing teams for every series he's been in for SOO, he hasn't been able to take the side to the next level & he has been playing grade now for 7 years.
