  • Roosters star Boyd Cordner defies injuries for pride of representing Country

    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/spo...-1226624388078

ON Monday morning young Roosters star Boyd Cordner fronted the Country Origin medical with a busted AC joint in his shoulder, a torn ligament in his foot and a gruesome gash across his head.

Roosters coaching staff didn't want their 20-year-old vice-captain to go any further.

But unlike the cast of players who decided to sit out this Sunday's annual clash and rest their wounded frames, Cordner demanded to play.

At that moment the passion and mystique surrounding this much-maligned fixture was revived.

After injuring his shoulder in the Foundation Cup trial match against Wests Tigers, Cordner was almost convinced to have surgery that would have sidelined him for three months.

Instead, he chose to delay the operation and slog through this season on daily physio sessions and weekly painkilling injections.

His lifelong desire to represent Country was a significant reason why.

"This was one of my goals at the start of the year," Cordner said. "Speaking to the (Roosters) coaching staff, they weren't too happy.

"They wanted me to have the week off and my priorities are with the Roosters.

"But I wanted to play this game so bad because it means so much to me.

"Growing up as a kid I always dreamed of doing this."It's a dream that sprouted from a nightmare the Taree product will never recall.

At just four years of age, Cordner lost his mother, Lanai, to breast cancer.

In her absence, his father Chris - a former lower-grader with Illawarra and Canterbury - raised two boys alone."Thinking back, I don't really have any memories of her and that pisses me off," Cordner said. "But I still think about her every day, no matter what I'm doing.

"A special occasion like this makes me so grateful for what I've achieved. I don't take anything for granted.

"That's why it's so important I achieve my goals, and this year making the Country team was my main one."

Had Roosters coach Trent Robinson ordered him to withdraw, the goal would have been left unfulfilled for at least another 12 months.

"That's what makes Trent the coach he is and the bloke he is," Cordner said.

"He understands the players and he understood how much this meant to me. This is the type of bloke I am.

"Why wouldn't you want to play in game like this?"

Robinson made no secret of the fact that he would rather have Cordner off-limits this week, with the club concerned about the long-term detriment of pushing a young player so hard.

"I would have preferred him not to play in this," Robinson said. "Getting needled every week is not ideal at this early stage of his career."I don't think it's wrong for me to try and protect a 20-year-old kid for the future.

"But the reason Boyd is this type of player is because he wants to play. So I was never going to ask him to pull out.

"If I did that, it would change the essence of the player and the fabric he's made of.

"In some ways we could be unlucky that he's playing, but in others we're lucky because we've got a bloke like this who can handle pressure and play through the pain.

"I had to respect that and in the end he's playing.

    "It's a credit to him."

I was going to have him but picked up SBW before the first round even though I was down on him. I have changed my tune markedly.

Geez Cordner is one tough bastard!! Robbo may need to tell him that he needs to be rested from playing the Anzac Day match due to his injuries and the short turnaround. He won't like it if it does eventuate, but it would be for his own good to get him through the season.

When he was injury free playing in the trials, holy sh!t he looked awsome!! He easily could have been selected to play for NSW and jag a place for the Kangaroos at the world cup with the way he was playing. Who knows he still could? Without a doubt his injuries are restricting him. I can't wait to see him injury free again!
The year 2013 marks the beginning of the Roosters next 'decade of excellence', and it will prove to be more successful than the last!

              Here's looking at you, kid.

Should get them fixed, dont want them to become long term injuries.

Cordner's playing brilliantly injured, just imagine what he would be like fully fit, which unfortunately we won't see until next season. The best part is that he is still only 20 years old. A future Kangaroos captain !! Congratulations to the Roosters recruitment staff who saw him play when he was still schooling in Taree and used to bring him down to play football for the Rooster junior teams on the weekends.

The last thing Cordner should do is play with a serious injury. For someone like Jason King it isn't that bad if he gets a career ending injury but Cordy's 20 not 30.

I wouldn't say he's been brilliant. He's up there with the most errors so far this year, and although he has been solid in defence, his attack hasn't been up to scratch like it was last year or even in this years trials.

Does anyone know what length of time it takes to recover from surgery to his injuries? I remember it being said earlier that he will hold out for the off season before he gets it fixed up.

He is a valuable player both short and long term but how long until his injuries start to effect others parts of his body?

I ended up with fractures in my back caused from the weaking of muscles in my back from continuing to play through manageable leg and foot injuries. I compensated for my injured feet and legs by offsetting my hips which in turn displaced the load on my back muscles which resulted in 9 months rehab.

Long story short, should he get sorted out sooner rather than later, or when it's too late?

Yes he should get it fixed, apart from potentially causing a worse injury, he must always have it in the back of his mind and it may be affecting his game, we have afew liabilities in mini and skids on the field at the moment, hope his stubborness doesnt make him another one. Not doubting his toughness in anyway, just his mindset.

Would the club doctor let him play if he was a risk? You would hope not.
