  • Mini to captain the toothless Sharks?

Few issues divide the rugby league community more than a player draft, and so it proved again when the prospect was raised by NRL chief executive Dave Smith.

Speaking in relation to the drugs scandal engulfing the code, Smith said an internal draft had been raised as one of many possible contingency plans should a club be ravaged by suspensions.

Of the six NRL clubs in ASADA’s sights, it is believed as many as 14 Cronulla players are facing the prospect of suspension for the use of banned substances in 2011.

Needing to ensure the Sharks remain competitive to maintain the eight games the NRL’s broadcast deal requires, Smith suggested a pool of players could be generated from players at other clubs.

Wests Tigers superstar Benji Marshall left little to the imagination as to his thoughts on the subject, particularly with six former Tigers teammates already on the Sharks books.

“To be honest, I think it’s a s**t idea,” Marshall said.

“I wouldn’t want any of my teammates to be put through that, put to the sword and (be told) `we don’t want you, you can go play for Cronulla’

“I’m happy to keep our players.

“Other teams can do it but just keep our team – we’ve already lost enough.”

Tigers teammate Chris Lawrence was far more diplomatic, but said rival NRL clubs should not be made to pay for the mistakes of others.

“You probably wouldn’t like it at first, but you just have to get on with it,” Lawrence said of being forced to move clubs.

“I’d hate to see a draft implemented just because of these problems and having to lose players … for us who have done nothing wrong.”

Tigers chief executive Stephen Humphreys denied anyone from the NRL had spoken to him about the possibility of supplying players for clubs stripped bare due to drug suspensions.

But Humphreys said there could be a positive in establishing a draft in certain circumstances.

“There would be some players who would see that opportunity as one they’d like to pursue,” Humphreys said.

“It would have to be a collaborative and co-operative process.”

Why so much effort to help this useless club? Get rid of them.

              It's the real deal.

Good idea imo. The game has to meet it's obligations under the TV deal or get sued by Nein and Pox Sports. Supplying players from a pool until this crap is sorted out is a sensible and proactive move by the games administration.

              Chook.

What if it were our club?

The idea has merit, although my preference would be for a "loan" type situation, where the player remains contracted to their original club however the new club picks up their salary for the loan period. We could therefore get first grade experience into one or two of our fringe players, however we have the ability to call them back at the end of the season, extend the loan deal, or offload the player.

We could give them Pearce, I like that idea.

This is BS. Why do clubs have to compromise their own depth and risk of winning a title for other clubs failures?
Let them go through the motions like what Melbourne and the Dogs had to go through.
If the broadcasters want to sue then the next time TV negotiations come up and the game is even bigger the independant commission can show up at the negotiating table with one of those large novelty cheques reminding them of what they sued them for.
Having said that, if the NRL forces each club to throw up three players names then I would accept if the names Mini, SKD and FPN are on that list.

The difference between this situation and the Bulldogs and Storm one is that they could lose up to 15 players. They would barely have a squad to pick from.

I think it's a fair idea, maybe a loan situation could be in play. Anyway there are plenty of players who would jump at the chance of playing in the NRL.

At least they are drawing up contingencies and testing how they play while it is still hypothetical.

I like the approach if not the proposed solution.

Realistically if this did eventuate the club ain't gonna put the Captain on any such list.

It just won't happen, at any club.

Also if I were a player forced to go somewhere I didn't want to go I'd be on the phone to Tezza Hill to find out his lawyers name and I'd be taking The NRL to court.

Fine if we had a draft, which is an idea I actually believe in, but they can't force players to go where they don't want to go, mid season.

It would be blokes who mostly play for Pootown the club would put on any list anyways.

Look out Bosden might get moved on.
