Luke O'Donnell's move to NRL club Sydney Roosters appears all but finalised after UK Super League side Huddersfield granted the Australian forward a release.

The 32-year-old former NSW Origin and Test enforcer had another 12 months left on his initial three-year contract with the Giants but reached a mutual agreement with the English club to be released.

He will return home this weekend and is expected to link up with the Roosters.

O'Donnell made just 23 appearances in his first two injury-hit seasons in the Super League but made an impressive return in Huddersfield's opening 40-4 win at St Helens 11 days ago.

However, he missed their win over London Broncos on Sunday amid reports his wife had become homesick and he had become unhappy over the tightening of tax regulations.

Huddersfield initially wanted Daniel Mortimer in exchange for O'Donnell but Roosters officials declined.

Giants managing director Richard Thewlis confirmed on Wednesday O'Donnell had sought and been granted a release with no strings attached.

"Firstly I would say that deep down neither Luke nor the club wanted this outcome to be how things panned out," said Thewlis.

"However, the reality is that Luke is financially in a different place now to that envisaged when he joined at the start of the 2011 season.

"The changing regulations in respect of offshore pensions have caused him significant difficulties but fortunately for him an opportunity has arisen back home which will help him going forward.

"We do not wish to stand in the way of a longer term opportunity for him as next year's Giants contract was an option we held and we would have wanted to see a long consistent run of appearances before we would commit to the fourth year.

"In a nutshell he understands where we are coming from, we understand his frustrations and we have simply shaken hands, wished each other all the very best and we each move on.

"There have been no deals done in respect of Luke's playing registration and he is free to choose his next destination back home."

if cherro goes to the dogs and rips i will be ****en spewing..... going to the gosford game. should be interesting to see how he goes. I remember the bulldogs trial last year and he looked amazing till he did his knee after ignoring the coaches request to leave the field cause he wanted the minutes under his belt....

so if the dogs are all of a sudden concerned about behaviour towards women, I guess they will stand down Kassiano and the others who were responsible at their mad monday celebrations...

heres the giants presser on lods release'

Huddersfield Giants can confirm that 32 year old loose forward Luke O’Donnell has now formally left the club by mutual agreement. The former Australian International will return home at the weekend and is expected to continue his career in the NRL.

Huddersfield Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis told www.giantsrl.com that the move was instigated by O’Donnell and granted by his club after taking all factors into account:

"Firstly I would say that deep down neither Luke nor the club wanted this outcome of an early release to be how things panned out. However the reality is that Luke is financially in a different place now to that envisaged when he joined at the start of the 2011season. The changing regulations in respect of off shore pensions have caused him significant difficulties - as I am sure it must have for other overseas players in the UK - but fortunately for him an opportunity has arisen back home which will help him going forward.

“We do not wish to stand in the way of a longer term opportunity for him as next year's Giants contract was an option we held and we would have wanted to see a long consistent run of appearances before we would commit to the fourth year which understandably was important for Luke. In a nutshell he understands where we are coming from, we understand his frustrations and we have simply have shaken hands, wished each other all the very best and we each move on.

“I am sure that he leaves some good friends behind here and for our part whilst we never saw him at his consistent week in week out best due to injuries he has been a superb professional to have in the club. I believe helped us lift our standards throughout the club and been a great role model to our younger forwards, some of whom must now look to take the opportunity that this presents to them.

“I would finish by saying that there have been no deals done in respect of Luke’s playing registration and he is free to choose his next destination back home down under."

where does it say in that article we will be losing cherro as a result? The fact he has been picked in the trial when others haven't speaks volumes

It annoys me that we have stuck by Cherrington for several years as he has sat out because of injury. Then on the eve of him returning fit to the team we get rid of him. I would have liked to have seen him have a few seasons here before we give him the flick!

As for Luke ODonnell, I think we lack an experienced forward and he has a lot to offer as far as experience and abilities go. But, with his injury record and his list of lengthy suspensions as well as age I am not really happy that the club has cleared some promising young talent for him.

In saying that though, our recruitment has done an awesome job so far and I find it hard to criticise them.

the final pieces seem to be falling into place now? we have assembled on paper an awesome team, one that other teams disrespect at their peril? promises to be a very interesting season!

Is Cherrington still classed as a 'promising young talent'?

'Could have been, but injury prone' is probably more like it. Park footy is full of blokes like that.

Like everyone, I'm surprised that we stuck by him for so long just to get rid of him at this stage.....but will I miss him when he's gone? Not really, it's hard to miss something you never had.

Horry said he's going to Penrith. That's good enough for me. Not that I'm happy about the decision mind you.
