In news just to hand we have been able to secure Dame Kiri Te Kawanawa to an incentive contract.

Should give us more depth in the team song area.

Mate every backrower tries to ball play these days, if they don't they're a prop.

My point is, this kid will have to be a Fletch or a Carty or a Clyde to really stand out.

            Chook.

Which back rower in our club tries to ball play? FPN has an offload but I don't know of any that can ball play at all.

The only difference between a backrower having an offload as opposed to a ball playing ability is success rate. Fletch was known as a ball playing backrower, but only because he was prolific and succeeded more times than he turned the pill over.

                  Chook.

Faliti Mateo is a perfect example of a ball playing backrower

One bad injury and that prediction could go tits up.

He's been playing second five in under 20s union, so you'd hope he's a ball player.

Not really true. Having the ability to offload is different to ball playing. Offloading happens at the line and usually after contact. Ball playing involves putting a runner through a hole before the line as well as having the ability to spot numbers and shift the ball quickly. Brad Taka is probably the best at it in our club now I think about it. There's Glenn Stewart at Manly, Kasiano at the Dogs to a certain degree but I don't really think there are too many others I would consider as 5/8ths trapped in forwards bodies

I think you're splitting hairs there. I see little difference, skill wise, passing before the line as opposed to offloading at or through it for a pig, either will create second phase play and both are regarded as "ball playing" by most pundits. I agree Taka is the best proponent of second phase play at our club at present and I can't wait to see him on the oppposite side to one SBW next year.

                                Chook.
