Roosters keen looking to move Setaimata Sa to accomodate acquisition of Lote Tuquiri

By Brent Read and Margie McDonald
    August 20, 2009

The Sydney Roosters are ready to step up interest in Lote Tuqiri by cutting loose utility Setaimata Sa at the end of the season - creating significant room to manoeuvre under the salary cap.

Tuqiri, engaged in a court case with the Australian Rugby Union for unfair dismissal, has publicly stated he would take a pay cut to return to the NRL next season.

However, the extent of that drop in pay could be mitigated if the Roosters can find a new home for Sa.

The Wests Tigers, the only other club interested in Tuqiri, have dropped their interest after a slew of phone calls to the dual international's manager went unanswered.

That leaves the Roosters as the only team in the market for the dual international.

But Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce denied there was any high level of interest in the sacked Wallabies winger.

"We haven't had any discussions with Lote Tuqiri's management or Lote," he said.

"It's common for people to think that clubs will always be interested in those quality of players."

Although Mark O'Meley and Craig Fitzgibbon are among the players leaving for England at season's end, some of that money has been used to extend and upgrade the contracts of Mitchell Pearce, Ben Jones, Anthony Cherrington and Jake Friend.

The Roosters are also in the process of re-signing fullback Anthony Minichiello and is close to officially unveiling former Canberra five-eighth Todd Carney.

    ---

    Good news I guess.

I am not at all sold on Tuqiri, but I think that we do not need Setaimata Sa. He is the Roosters equivalent of Ben Te'o - a very talentd player with an attitude problem, and hopefully a move for him will help him realize his potential. We have plenty of backrow talent, but I would still be hesitant on releasing Sa just yet, as I would like to see how he goes under Smith.

We have no sponsor and plenty of dickheads

Why do we need another one

He obviously did something pretty bad to get the sack from the ARU

He is well past his best and last played NRL in 2002

And we are freeing more money to pay him OVERS

I have seen this SHIT all to often lately

I'll take both Tuqiri and Carney if they're cheap!
I heard Carney was asking 200K... I'd say NO WAY MAN! 100k + bonuses worth up to 250K if you stay out of trouble and play really well.

Tuqiri... look no doubting the guy's a champ. But sorta like how the Dragons snared Sailor... he'd have to be cheap. He's 29, has lost a lot of his pace, and hasn't played League for some time. Again I'd like some kind of performance based contract... maybe a bit more than Carney because he's a better player and hasn't been involved in anything criminal... but he's just been sacked (and we have no idea why! Maybe never will!) We'd be offering him a lifeline as the Pirates aren't currently paying him anything.

It was reported Carney's manager was asking around $400,000 per season back in February or March. Not long after that it was pretty much confirmed as coming to us. I'd be highly surprised if we have him tied up for about half that.

As for Tuquiri coming on the cheap that is laughable if there is any semblance of truth that we are looking at offloading a player to pay Tuquiri. If it is the case I'd say Tuquiri is after $300,000 a season which is way OVER imho.

Thats my worry, he was just ordinary in 02 and hasnt done much but catch a cold in Yawnion.

At least Dell was still at the top of his game when he left League and was hungry to get back to our game, he wasnt a Yawnion player, he only went for the fame he thought it would bring. Dell just thinks hes Wesley Pipes.

IMO Lorte has an attitude that hes a "supreme athlete". I want FOOTBALLERS who love to get dirty.

Still Hed have to be better than what Sa offers. Nothing from what ive seen. Although MAYBE Smiff could get in his head.

          Its a 50/50 call I guess.

Rubbish! Tuqiri did 10 times what Dell did in Union. And Dell came back to league AFTER 2 years of doing nothing, due to his drugs ban. Tuqiri is a more versatile and flexible player, will make his return younger than Dell did and has also been playing consistently for the past 2 seasons, not coming off a 2 year ban

              Thanks for that Garbo Boy.

Show me where I said Dell did more than Lorte in Yawnion???

If you read what I wrote I said b4 they both left League Dell was the better player in better form, and thats just my OPINION of course.

I actually said Dell wasnt ever a Yawnion player, he went for the fame. At least Lorte had played the game before and yes he probably did better.

That however has NOTHING to do with how they would play League again. Dell is being utilised properly in a very well coached team. I have no doubts if Lorte went to the Stains hed kill it again.

But coming to the basket case thats Easts it COULD be a disaster. As rcptn said "I have seen this SHIT all to often lately" and I agree with that. Too often we will go with the big name/big cash signing and HOPE for a result. Im hoping Smiff attracts HUNGRY footballers looking for OPPORTUNITY.

Lorte IMO is a glory hunter. An "athlete" looking for a payday. By all means if he wants to play for incentives, similar to what Mullos did, bring it on. Otherwise I believe we will be again be in the "poo" with our current cap situation.

BTW I dont call catching a cold in Yawnion "playing consistently". That games a Joke, Lortes wasted his talent IMO.

Also wheres he more flexible, in his pants???? Theyre both wingers FFS.

good play from someone at the club.
shop him around, he realises the club is onto him and also that he's being paid overs.
he goes "oh shit I'd better put in if I want my cash".

It'll be interesting to see if he has a crack this week!

I would be happy to have Tuqiri (at the right price) but not at the expense of Sa, yes Sa has under achieved and made **** all of an impact this year however i am hoping that with a new coaching structure we might be able to bring the best out of him.

Until he gets played in his best position 2nd Row

It's probably a little unfair for people to judge him so harshly imho

Most agree Maubs best position is in the backrow mate, but at least hes given everything in the centres.

IMO Sa has more potential than Maubs but doesnt show any interest or heart for the cause.

I agree it would be nice to see a good coach try and work with him though.

                        Sure thats most peoples perception

But the numbers make interesting reading as well

                        Games in the centres 2009
                        Aubusson 13, tries 4, LB 5,LBA 3,TA 2,OFFL 7,ERR 9, Ave Runs 5.6 Ave Metres 49, Ave tackles 13.8 ave miss tackles 1.7

                        Sa 11, Tries 4,LB 5,LBA 3, TA 1,OFFL 13, ERR 11, Ave Runs 7.8 Ave Metres 60, Ave Tackles 20.2, Ave missed tackles 2.5

Not a hell of a lot of difference Sa might be putting in as much as Aubusson. Mitch always looks pretty intense where as Sa always looks relaxed.

Morbs has done very well in the centres considering he is a natural lock. He can score tries, set them up, and his defense is very good. We need him in the centres now because regardless of his positional preference, he has been our most consistent centre since moving there when Freddy took over in 2007.

Before Freddy took over, under Anderson Morbs played 10 games (2 at five-eighth, 1 at lock, the rest on the bench). Since Freddy took over, Morbs has played 43 games- 4 on the bench, 3 at lock, and the remaining 36 of the games at centre. In his 36 games at centre, he has scored 15 tries, made 19 linebreaks and broke 92 tackles.

It isn't amazing stats by any means, and if we had kept Monaghan we would have been far better off, but it is far better than what Soliola was managing, and at least Mitch is consistent and reliable in defense, even if his hands can sometimes fail him.

In comparison, Setaimata Sa, under Freddy, has played 21 games at centre, for 8 tries, 9 linebreaks, and 27 tackles breaks.

It is obvious that Sa has more talent, it is his attitude that is frustrating.

Stats are funny things I suppose. Where do those stats come from???? I know Wally has always said dont believe the NRL ones they are always way out.

I suppose the intensity thing plays a big part. And if you look at what Macks posted, Maubs is waaaay out in front of Sa.

Also the fact Sa has more potential but seems to do alot less with it. Maubs may have less potential but always seems to try to maxamise that potential.

My problem with Sa is the way he hits the line, he doesnt look like hes trying to get thru it. And same in defence he doesnt seem to want to drill the opposition. IMO Maubs seems to want to do both.

Amos always looked relaxed, copped plenty of stick for it also, but he always seemed to manage to find the tryline, kick a few goals and go looking for the ball. Now hes gone IMO its obvious the bloke did a good job for us, something none of the other wingers weve used since can.

I really hope Sa can live up to the hype. Maybe we all hoped for too much, we were told he was gonna be the next big thing, I guess its disappointing how hes flatlined.

I do agree it would be nice to see him play under a totally new coaching structure. Then again that could be said for the whole club.

Im no closer to understanding it all, just more .
