  • coo ted helliar on the 2013 draw

The official 2013 NRL draw has been released and we have some massive clashes to start the season.

Six of the first eight rounds are home games including the NRL season opener against arch rivals the Rabbitohs in Round 1.

A massive home game against the Bulldogs and the Anzac Day clash at home are further highlights of the season.

We caught up with the club's Chief Operating Officer - Commercial Ted Helliar to discuss what the draw means to the club.

What are your initial thoughts on the draw?

It's a good draw for us. it is very heavy in the front end and we are glad to be hosting 3 of the biggest blockbusters of the year. There are a few short term turn arounds which is worrying, for example we play manly in Round 9 on a Monday night then play in Townsville on the Saturday but there are some longer turn arounds so it all evens out.

Are you glad to be playing the Rabbitohs in the opening game of the NRL season?

We couldn't be happpier, we don't want to play anyone else in the opening round of the competition. We have a good working relationship with the Bunnies to maximise the event presentation but in saying that we still take great satisfaction in beating them. The hype and anticipation around the season opener will be enormous and with SBW in the ranks we encourage all Members and fans to get to the game because it will be huge.

All the home games this season will be played at Allianz Stadium, was the a decision that was made by the club?

Yes. For the time being no more home games will be played away from Allianz Stadium. We are working really hard to build a great environment here so the ground really is our house. We want people to turn up and be proud of where we are and rivals turning up knowing they are in the Roosters house.

How beneficial is having the first 20 rounds locked in?

It changes everything. It allows us to plan well and maximise everything we offer.

How good is it to host the traditional ANZAC Day match?

The ANZAC Day match is up there alongside State of Origin and the GF as one of the marquee games of the year. Both us and the Dragons along with the NRL work closely together to make this a great event not just for NRL fans but for all people of Sydney. We love the day and the clash and it is more than just a football game and we are honoured to pay respect to the tradition of the ANZAC's .

We have no games in South East Queensland this season. How disappointed is the club by this decision?

We are really disappointed to have no game in the area in 2013. We thought we would be playing the Broncos at Suncorp on the Easter Weekend. That obviously changed and was completely out of our control. We have a lot of Members and supporters in the area and we are just as disappointed as them.. Any interstate Member from the area should call our Membership team and they can redeem their tickets for tickets to a Sydney game or a Members T-shirt.

I found this interesting because any time I take the kids to a coaching clinic or a team BBQ or any other such event & we park in the Members car park, the kids always ask me why there are Tigers flags up or Swans or Waratah's flags or any of the other teams that share the ground with us. I think the sooner we piss the Tigpies off from our SFS the better! If they really want to make it our house then it should be our house all the time, the other codes sharing the Stadium doesn't annoy me as much, but why do the Tigs share our ground with us, especially when they have Leichardt & Campbelltown already, why should a Western Suburbs & Balmain merged team need a base in the east, I don't get it!?!?

You better get your kids used to it Arty as surburban grounds are dead mate.

Most games over the coming years will be played out of ANZ or Allianz as per the AFL model of hosting games at major venues.

      Chook.

Yeah, I get that, don't really like it but I get it, but I don't get why we share it with basically a Western Suburbs/inner west club??

The Tigers playing at the SFS is a sore point with our management.
The Tigers are paid a guaranteed payment to play there, where as we have to hire the ground and hope the crowd numbers turn the event into a profit for us...

SFS have us by the balls. Where else can we really go to play? The only way they would give us a deal is start negotiating with ANZ (which would go down like a lead balloon with the fans) the next time our contract is up. Otherwise we have no bargaining position. The Tigers can play the venue's off against each other to get a deal.
            ...

Unfortunatly for us you are spot on.
At least we are not homeless and dragging our fans around 3 different home grounds each season...

we could always relocate to Qld - play at Lang Park when Broncos aren't there - at least then we Qlders would get to see them play.
There's a reason why the young and idealistic become the old and cynical.

I think Parramatta & possibly Up up Cronulla will be able to stay where they are. Dragons will be allowed to play out of Win Stadium.

Speaking of the ANZAC day game, I'm quietly confident I'll be walking out in a bit better mood next year.

The Merge will be lucky to avoid the cookware.
