    Canavan declares Roosters will rise

RETURNING boss Brian Canavan believes the under-achieving Sydney Roosters are finals-bound next year - with or without Sonny Bill Williams.
Canavan, back as chief operating officer at the Roosters after quitting the club in 2008 following 15 years of previous service, says Williams would be a welcome addition to rugby league - but claims he doesn't know if the dual international will be at his club next season.
''Because I haven't stepped into the finances, salary cap or player list world at this stage,'' Canavan said yesterday. ''Today's my first meeting with the staff list.''

But asked if Williams was someone he was interested in having at the Roosters, Canavan said: ''The game's personally interested in him. He's a wonderful player and rugby league would love to have him back.''
He said any baggage Williams might bring would be ''pretty good baggage''.
''You're referring to the five years ago baggage - we're all different after five years,'' he said. ''None of us were inside the Canterbury club at that time so I don't know what transpired there.''
Williams the part-time boxer is currently focusing on his fight next month with South African heavyweight Francois Botha, but the World Cup-winning All Black said his move to the tricolours was a fait accompli after making a handshake agreement with Roosters chairman Nick Politis.
''It's a done deal. I made it a long time ago,'' the 27-year-old told The Sun-Herald last weekend.
''I know where I'm playing next year and I'm ready to meet the challenge head-on.''
Canavan was also coy about the prospect of Williams's stablemate, disenchanted Wallabies five-eighth Quade Cooper, running out for the Roosters. ''His name hasn't been mentioned but the player list hasn't really been in my discussions,'' he said.
Regardless of the playing roster, Canavan is confident the Roosters will bounce back in a big way after missing the finals for the past two years and finishing a lowly 13th this season.
''It [the club] played in the 2010 grand final. There is success in the walls of the club,'' he said.
''We've just got to take a bit of paint off and re-do this and re-do that. It dropped a number of games last year by a few points and, as a result, it needs a bit of tweaking a bit of freshness, and I can see the club climbing the ladder very, very quickly - and very steeply too.''
The club has undergone quite the cleanout, with chief executive Steve Noyce sacked on Monday for Canavan after long-time skipper Braith Anasta - off to Wests Tigers - and coach Brian Smith also parted ways with the Roosters.
Canavan, though, insists he's neither feeling the pressure to deliver or that the Roosters were a revolving door for players, coaches and administrators.
''I don't see it that way,'' he said. ''I was here for 15 years … three quarters of the staff have been here for many, many years.''

Are you suggesting something like stripping it back til there is nothing left but a "wall"?

I would have liked him to come out & say "realistically we will be lucky to make the 8 next season because Nick is still getting involved in matters that he has NFI about". (Player retention & player recruitment) plus also having handshake deals with certain players.

Until the Roosters employ a coach who has 1st & last say on all football team matters, they are just making up the numbers.

How do we know this is the case, lets take Carney as an example my version of events is that the board and coach wanted him gone and Nick wanted to keep him... that was my mail now which is true....I dont know none of us do for a fact.

As for SBW initially I was against him but now warming to him.... look at what Del Piero has done for Syd FC membership through the roof and 35k crowds. Now consider that in the semi's last yr they got 12k!!!!

From a marketing point of views SBW is worth millions its the difference of playing at SFS and fckn Darwin lol he will also add to the team the guy is an allblack and a professional AND can play. The way this deal has been done is an absolute master stroke!!!!!!!!

SC I hope SBW all the best I hope he kills it, especially if we play the North Qld Cowboys who have Jothathon Thurston & Ben Barba in Darwin & Des Hasler the Bulldogs coach is watching Jim Dymock watching the Roosters giving it to the Broncos.

I do see where you are coming from in regards to SBW without Nick there is no SBW but it could all turn sour. I hope it doesn't but to me Nick allows these leg up scenarios that quite often backfire.

In regards to the Carney situation I have no idea of what went down other than the final decision but when you mention that the board and coach wanted him gone and Nick wanted to keep him just go's to show me that there is a devision in the board room, for that kind of info to get out shows there is devision, which then has an effect right through the organisation. Only my opinion.

Any player u buy comes with risk there are no safe bets with any purchase!
I dont know the figures but it appears (if we get sbw) by allowing him to play in japan and fight he tops up his dollars and comes to us at a heavy discount, he will bring value imo.
As for carney why does it spell division in the board room and why doesnt that tell u that perhaps nick doest make every call?

Either way what ppl post on here is opinion and speculation or rumour and not fact remeber that.

He did want to keep Carney he regrets listening to people telling him he had to go probably one of the reasons why the muppets Smith,Noyce have been shown the door.

One minute you are crapping on about Politis having full say and surrounded by yes men,now you state there is divisions in the board room because other members had a different view.
