Canavan's first mission to keep halfback Mitchell Pearce at Roosters

FORGET about Sonny Bill Williams and even Quade Cooper - the main priority for incoming boss Brian Canavan is making halfback Mitchell Pearce a Rooster for life.

Answering some of the questions that sacked chief executive Steve Noyce would not, replacement Canavan said re-signing Pearce, who is off contract at the end of next season, was his chief concern.
"I see him here for his whole career," Canavan said. "I will do everything in my work capacity to ensure that happens. Mitchell will obviously be a 300-plus game player. He has all the attributes of his dad as a player. He is very, very important to this club.
"Mitchell and I go way back. He was on scholarship to us in my time here.
"We already have an existing relationship."
It is no secret Pearce was unhappy under former coach Brian Smith - so much so that it is believed he met with Bulldogs coach Des Hasler.

The Dragons are desperate for a halfback and have their sights on Pearce.
As for Williams, Canavan said he had not discussed his imminent arrival when accepting the chief operating officer role from all-powerful chairman Nick Politis.
The Australian reports today that new coach Trent Robinson spent the day with Williams in Japan earlier this year, when Robinson was there on holidays.
"I honestly don't know where that one is at," Canavan said. "I haven't seen any budgets, players lists, salary caps. My view is we would love to have him in rugby league. Now that I am back at the Roosters we would love to have him here."
When it came to continuing speculation about Cooper, who is disgruntled with the Wallabies, Canavan said: "Quade's never been mentioned. He is not on the radar at all."
The issue in the minds of many is how much say he will have beneath the long shadow cast by Politis.
When Canavan was asked if he was prepared to tell the chairman to "butt out" of football matters, he smiled: "Of course I will."
He added: "At the end of the day he's a good fella. He defines passion. It must be a bit of a release valve for him from his business pressures.
"He is quite a private man, as we know. But he has a lot of care and concern for people. He has really good business feel and business empathy.
"What he is trying to do is get this club stabilised going forward because it has slipped. They came 13th and they shouldn't have. From what I saw they were a borderline top-eight side last year."

    This quote sums Pearce up.

"He (Pearce) has all the attributes of his dad as a player."

I'm old enough to remember Wayne Pearce. And one thing struck me above all else.

    HE WAS NEVER A HALFBACK.

Doesn't have to be the same position, he can have all the attributes of another player regardless of whatever position they played.
The one major difference I can see between Jnr Jnr and Jnr Snr, was that Snr was a tea totaller never touched alcohol. We all know the acorn fell a long way from the tree on that one !

even if he did mean it like that, he didnt say wayne has all the attributes of Mitchell....Mitchell does have all the attributes of his dad...plus more attributes that half backs possess...waynes only attributes was toughness and determination...and them two made him a great player

Brian is a highly regarded administrator and his heart is with the chooks so happy days...but this worries me.
"From what I saw they were a borderline top-eight side last year."
Obviously didnt see much of us. I am a die-hard but anyone that thinks we were a borderline top 8 team this year is spinning it too hard.

maybe he is hinting at the fact the refs robbed us of at least 4 games this season, if not more..or perhaps he is relating to the fact that we lost 2 games in the final minute, and drew another with cronulla...if just 2 or 3 of them situations had fallen in our favour, we would have made the 8.

Look at the stats. We were terrible. While we copped a few bad calls we were nowhere near good enough to make the 8. The sooner we make that call, the sooner we can fix it.

we played terrible yes...but so did 8 or 9 other teams....as i said 2 or 3 extra wins and we would have made the 8. you dont have to play great to make the 8

I'm sure the players and coach know where they stood last year and where the improvement is required. The new players, the experience the young players got and those that have left and hopefully are leaving will be an improvement. The CEO or COO or whatever his abbreviation is will always put a positive spin out to the media. We were 5 points off 9th which was a sh!t Dragons and Tigers teams and as punky pointed out, with a bit of luck we would have been closer to the 8. He is not far off the mark saying we were a borderline top 8 team. He didn't say we should have made the 8.

                        Agree,

                        Wayne was also smarter

Jnr is not a chip off the ole block, no way, to compare is like the easy option.

Jnr to me should be a hooker in the Cam Smith mould. But how smart is Cam!

                          Two things.

                          1. What is wrong with stating an obvious fact. Wayne Pearce, to the best of my knowledge, was never a first grade halfback.

                          2. If Mitch is such a brilliant halfback then why in the last five years, the only time we did any good, was when he had the supposed drunk, degenerate criminal Todd Carney next to him?

Maloney will make him look good and we'll all be deluded again into thinking he's the next Andrew Johns.

Young Mitchell Pearce was impressive this year as his statistics show. We have had a poor forward pack since 2005 except for season 2008 and season 2010 when young Pearce performed very well. I believe our forwards made the least metres of any team in the competition and combined with the worst discipline for penalties and handling errors what much more can you expect of a half back?

Rugby League is a forward dominant game with the 10 interchange rule. During the unlimited interchange era we ruled the roost with a forward pack very few teams could match. Canterbury-Bankstown have the best forward pack in the competition but they have a halves pairing that a lot of fans believe to be inferior.
