I've just finished reading Hindmarsh's book and you can barely go a page without Hindmarsh paying some sort of tribute to Smith.
This of course does not mean he is a good coach.

09 was from shit player retention and development. there was no stability at all. one marker and a two step shuffle in the defencive line. and our only attack was the kick early game
Was Smith a brilliant coach in 2009? Or are there more factors to results than just the coach?
I assume you mean 2010 Dice, as Smith was still with the Ferral Druggos in 09.
2010 was Smith's honeymoon period. Most roosters coaches have one - some last longer than others.
It will be interesting to see how long Trent Robinson's lasts. I'm hoping for his sake it's a while, because otherwise not only will the players revolt against him, so will the majority of supporters.
Rightly or wrongly, that's the Rooster way.

Supporting the RW&B, through good times and bad times.

Correct, I meant 2010. We have had two "crap" coaches loathed by fans and players yet during the honeymoon period we became premiership contenders for both coaches. Despite this, many fans still have a simplistic view that everything rides on the coaches, as though the playing roster and player attitudes have no bearing on team performance.
Regarding Robinson, our signings for next year will transform this team. I also expect the board have learnt their lesson and will ensure Robinson doesn't have to deal with the remaining high maintenance princesses beyond his honeymoon period.

does the coach play any part or have any responsibility in terms of players attitudes?

No. If I choose to turn up to work and carry on like a pork chop, that is my responsibility. We are all responsible for how we conduct ourselves at all times, whether it be at work, on a date, on the footy field or dancing on the ceiling for that matter. None of this, oh the devil made me do it nonsense. If you are being payed 400k a year to throw or catch a ball for goodness sake, step up and do it to the best of your ability!

And if you do carry on "like a pork chop", as our beloved ex-captain did for most of the year, whose job is it to fuuck you off to where you belong?

You are sort of correct.
But you were wrong when you answered a resounding "No" to whether the coach played "any part" or had any "responsibility" in players' attitudes. This is the coach we are talking about. For him to have no responsibility or have no role in a group of player's attitudes suggests he is failing in one of his most crucial responsibilities as a motivator.
FTR, i do think Smith played his role well as the "cleaner"

i agree to some extent.
but a few points.
I do not believe that our players were carrying on like pork chops. In fact, I believe it was the reverse from what I know.
also, what if for example your boss carries on day after day after day in a terrible fashion towards you and towards the other staff? do you just put up with it? or do you go about your work as best as you can under difficult circumstances and look at going to interviews with other companys that might have a better workplace environment? or do you have a small whinge now and then to your friends or family about how terrible your boss is?
also, not all players are on $400k. there are plenty in each club on much lower than you can imagine. for every $400k player in a club, there is another one who is on hardly anything by comparison.

I work for myself so if I did have that problem I'd be in real trouble. I was referring to a certain player on 400k who has been bad mouthing Smithy all over the eastern suburbs for the past 2 years. Ironically, under his coaching, this player has won an international award, equalled a long standing record and played in a grand final.

Have to disagree with you. A coach can have a major impact on a player's attitude. Players aren't robots, that's the only way they could turn up and do their job to the best of their ability regardless of the management style of the coach. A coach's job is to create the right environment so that his players are happy, confident and ready to play to their optimum. Has Smith done that?
