  • ROAR Column on RTS & The Roosters

In my June 18 article “SBW, Tuivasa-Sheck could bring Roosters into 2013 favouritism”, I asked who the Roosters’ budding champion Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will choose to represent: his country New Zealand, or the NSW Blues?
Since then, Tuivasa-Sheck has not only graduated into first grade but set the rugby league world on fire. He promises to be a major reason why the ailing Sydney Roosters can combine with Sonny Bill Williams next year and help the tricolours to challenge for the title.
The skill that he showed on Friday night to side step Kangaroo Brett Morris was stunning. Then, to work his way through traffic up the field 60m and set up a try, was something you do not see from a 19-year-old in just their second senior game.
Anybody that had seen Roger would not be surprised. The media have been quick to jump on the RTS bandwagon but only after they had been very critical of the Roosters for allowing Sam Perrett to leave the club and move to the Bulldogs.
I know who Steve Kearney would prefer in a Kiwi jersey.
RTS is very special no doubt but he will really stand out when coach Brian Smith finally gets up enough courage to select him in his rightful position of fullback.
This would require either moving or sacking club favourite son Anthony Minichiello, who surely must be flattered to be selected each week.
The move is likely to happen next season as Mini, although still very fit, lacks speed and power to bust a tackle and made two bad errors last Friday night. In is favour, he remains a friend of the board, which means he will not be sacked even if it means the coach losing his job.
The fact that we are even discussing who RTS will play for at representative level is a major issue that the ARLC must address. It should be a clear cut black and white decision and not something that a teenager should be agonising over.
Friday night’s 26-10 win over the Dragons moves the Roosters to 19 points, which should ensure they will not finish with the wooden spoon. Coach Smith can breathe easy – at least for another week.

Glad to see other's recognise mini's dimishining capabilities.

Can we change his nic to Mythra for the remainder of his tenure?

    Chook.

Well its sad but true, Mini has had his day in the sun, if he was a true clubman, he'd tell the Roosters the new contract was an error, and while he is still reasonably ok, slip over to engish league or italian rugby, and get a quid for his pension fund. Failing that, for the remainder of the season, we should play RTS fullback in attack, and Mini on the wing, to start the eventual takeover, because if we are fair dinkum, next season looks like the Manly buy, will be one winger, with 2 or 3 others fighting it out for the other wing spot. And a good chance mini will be at Newtown, except for any fill in duties, he may have to do.

        Cheers.........Burnt Rooster

There was a thread on here about the original column, he did predict we would let go of Mini to make way for RTS which made plenty of us excited at the time, unfortunately his prediction was wrong.

He seems to be engaged with us more so that your average commentator. I wonder if he reads this forum or is an Easts fan?

RTS is a star no question about that.

Just on the Mini criticism...I think im out on a limb here with other forum posters but I believe he has been one of our best this year.

Being a "reward for effort" kind of person when assessing who should be in the top squad, I see Mini having another year in him.

Move him to the wing by all means but I still think he can add value to the top squad.

I'd love to see RTS play for the Blues, even though it would make a mockery of eligibility rules, we have already had a case of that with James Tamou.

So if I were Gus/Sticky/Freddy/Barrett/Bob Fulton/Loz, I would be on the phone straight away to RTS trying to get him play for NSW Blues.

He isn't from NSW and should therefore not be chased.

Tamou shouldn't be playing for us either.

He may have been the best but not many competing for that honour. I still feel that let RTS get used to first grade before unleashing him at FB. I once remember how many were praising J Carney and why Smith wouldn't put him on and when he came on, he had some highlights but that all faded away. Let the kid grow up a little.
