  • Samsung Dumps Sydney Roosters

    By David Richards | Friday | 31/07/2009

EXCLUSIVE: Only weeks after LG pulled the plug on their sponsorship deal with the Cronulla Sharks, Samsung has decided not to renew their sponsorship deal with the Sydney Roosters for next season.
According to Samsung Australia executives, the club was told the news some weeks ago.

The loss of millions of dollars worth of sponsorship from consumer electronics Companies, comes as Rugby League struggles with a culture of binge drinking, orgies and drunken behaviour by both management and players.

The loss of Samsung as a key sponsor to the League will come as a big blow for the Sydney Roosters who are currently sitting on the bottom of the table.

A senior Samsung executive told ChannelNews that the decision to not renew their sponsorship deal with the Sydney Roosters was taken several weeks ago. This was the time when the club's coach Freddie Fittler was being accused of drunken behaviour at a beachside hotel.

It has also been revealed that Samsung will stay as the sponsor of Chelsea Football Club in the UK, after knocking back a $70M dollar a year sponsorship deal from Manchester United.

Samsung insiders are also tipping a mega sponsorship deal by Samsung to coincide with the Soccer World Cup of which one of the major sponsors is Sony.

Yet another reality check those running the Club needed in order to get serious about changing the culture and attitude of the players and coaching staff.

Our image and reputation have taken a hammering this year, on and off the field. I don't blame a blue chip company like Samsung for not wanting to be connected with the shambles the Roosters currently are.

Considering the Roosters were told of this decision a few weeks ago I'm wondering whether it was the catalyst for Brian Smith being bought to the club and the final nail in Fittler's coffin.

And we both know who you and I would put forward as the first head on the chopping block.

I'd be putting a couple of the older repeat offenders heads on the chopping blocks. And to think Melon wants one of them to captain

Well, that is terrible news but not surprising. I hope freddy and some of the idiot players are proud of themselves because samsung not renewing is likely a direct consequence of their behaviour and performances. And yes, why hasn't this been reported elsewhere?

The off-field incidents have finally taken it's toll on sponsors. We've been struggling for revenue even with sponsors, so how will we deal with this latest setback. It's been a long season for us Chooks supporters.
