Very sad to learn that Johnny “Monkey” Mayes has passed away after a battle with brain cancer, aged 78.

One of my favourites from the glorious ’70’s. He won 3 consecutive premierships, with Manly in ’73, and with the all-conquering Roosters in ‘74 -‘75.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

    RIP Monkey.

Still vividly remember him taking a pass from Pickett and running towards where my Dad and I were sitting in the Noble Stand to score the opening try of the 1975 GF under the posts.

    RIP Johnny.
