Holbrook set to be appointed as Knights coach as Cheika firms for Roosters gig SMH

The Newcastle Knights are set to rubber stamp the appointment of Justin Holbrook as the club’s new head coach at a board meeting on Monday night.

It comes as the Sydney Roosters prepare to replace Holbrook, their current assistant coach, with former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika for next season.

Sources with knowledge of discussions talking on the condition of anonymity due to confidentiality said Holbrook will be put forward as the recommended head coach.

The decision was made by the five-man sub-committee of chief executive Peter Parr, general manager Chris James, club legend Michael Hagan, director Tony Price and chairman Geoff Coburn.

Holbrook has beaten the likes of Dragons assistant coach Dean Young as well as Knights assistant coaches Brian McDermott and Blake Green.

Holbrook last coached in the NRL at the Gold Coast Titans but was moved on mid-way through the 2023 season.

He has been working with the Sydney Roosters since, also working alongside former Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga with the national team.

Holbrook’s experience as an NRL coach is deemed vital as he prepares to assume the role of Adam O’Brien’s successor.

Cheika also showed interest in the Knights job but is set to reunite with Trent Robinson at the Roosters.

Cheika has previously worked as a consultant to Robinson at the Tricolours but will take on a more senior role on the coaching staff of the club from next season.

Robbo and Cheika are both Alphas so not too sure about this.

He wouldn’t get the job if Robbo didn’t approve.

Also, why in the fark would you sign Holbrook as your head coach when he flopped big time at the Titans?

I was hoping John Strange might get the assistant gig.

            Criminally underrated !

Strange would be a solid choice and worthy of a step up closer to the prime-time action of Men's first-grade NRL.

Was Cheika ever our assistant coach previously?

Be interesting to see what Mic Check 101 does for us. What does an assistant coach actually do... is it a management role or a hands on conditioning / tactical kinda role?

I pictured Holbrook as being more of a practical/technical dude and Mic Check as being more of a management type. Could be wrong though.

Perfect candidate and the optimum springboard into a head coaching role.

Don't think so but Robbo's always had a good relationship with him and been willing to combine sessions with the Tahs use him as a brains trust? Be interesting...

John Strange probably has enough on his plate currently - Head of the Central Coast Roosters Pathways , NRLW Head Coach and NSW Women's SOO Coach.

He picked them up as wooden spooners and returned them to the finals in his second season, I'd hardly say he was a flop.

I can't imagine a more undesirable head coaching job in the comp at the moment, even the Tigers seems to have somewhat turned their administration around.

i was hoping the knights didn't realise he was the best candidate for the job. oh well, good luck to him.
cheika is hardly an unknown quantity. clearly robbo thinks he's the best man for the job.
john strange? not sure about that. does he want to cross over? seems like he's on a good thing atm.

Would you employ him as your head coach if you were the CEO?

He’ll be a bit of a loss as I think his main job is looking after our attack. I could be wrong though. Good luck to him at Newcastle. He’s going to need it!
