  • Question: Top try scorer.

Does anyone know when Easts last had the top try scorer in a regular home and away season?

And a bonus question: Has any Easts player scored more than 20 tries in a regular home and away season?
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

I heard they were changing the eligibility rules for top try scorer. If your last name has more than 12 letters in it you are ineligible. To be announced next week

Terry Fahey was top tryscorer in 1981 with 15 tries.

Michael Jennings got 20 in 2013. Tafua and David Williams also got 20.

Dave Brown scored 38 tries in 1935. It’s still the record for tries in a season.

That one I knew about. I was more interested in recent history. I doubt Brown's record will ever be beaten - even though regular seasons are much longer. Thanks for reminding me anyway.

Given the try's Johnson has been gifted by the officials, I'm expecting him to edge closer to the record this round. And yes, I know Souffs have the bye this weekend.

                In that case …

                1999: Nathan Blacklock - 25, top
                2010: SKD - 20, 2nd (Uarte 21)
                2019: Latrell Mitchell - 18, top

I just asked chatGPT. I don't think it's everything it's cracked up to be. It just gave me these figures:

                    • 2001: Nathan Blacklock (St George Illawarra Dragons) – 24 tries
                    • 2002: Nigel Vagana (Canterbury Bulldogs) – 23 tries
                    • 2003: Matt Geyer (Melbourne Storm) – 19 tries
                    • 2004: Matt Bowen (North Queensland Cowboys) – 22 tries

Matt Bowen's consistent performance as the top try-scorer in the NRL regular season from 2004 to 2025 is noteworthy. His speed, agility, and try-scoring ability have made him a standout player in the league.

When you think about it Dave browns 38 is phenomenal when you add that to his other records some of which are also still standing nearly 100years after he set them makes him the greatest player to have ever played the game just like Bradman in cricket the records tell the story of who was the best wasn’t the Clive Churchill medal changed from the Dave brown medal about the time our junior areas were gifted to south’s? I think it was a terrible injustice done by a south’s controlled league at the time i hope we smash them next week

Wow, so Bowen has 484 tries in his career, but for some reason he is not recognised as the top try scorer in rugby league history

SKD went pretty close to being top try scorer in 2010

And apparently he's still running around in the NRL - at the age of 43 .
