  • Sandon Smith given permission to talk with other teams

No surprise to see Smith has reportedly been given permission to find a new home for 2026.

I wish him well, Canberra and Ricky is a good fit . In the meantime Hugo is busily searching for real estate in Perth .

I don’t think Hugo will be a victim in this - if he keeps going the way he is the club will make sure they hang onto him. Might be he has to play nsw cup and be limited to injury cover for firsts however it’s just one season and he’s a rooster tragic - I’m hoping that is enough to get him to wait 12 months. Maybe a loan but I hope not and I also hope that DCE if coming as a player honestly has to earn his spot over Hugo and that no certainty imo if they are both fighting it out on a level playing field. It’s a shame he’s now in that position though as from what he’s shown to date and his trajectory we don’t need DCE anymore.

At least that article doesn’t call Sandon a “veteran playmaker “ like the one on news.com this morning. Clueless Rugby League ‘journalism’ strikes again.

Also no mention that he knocked back our offer for an extension late last year. Now he’s a “casualty”.

            Is not an nrl playmaker
maybe a decent 14 at another club
showed he wasn’t up to it this year at 6
Would have gone anyway without DCE coming being behind both Walker and savala

I don’t think he gets into Canberra’s team mate. Strange is a better and bigger version of what Sandon is and they have huge wraps on Ethan Sanders as a 7 hence why Fogarty was allowed to leave.

The writing was on the wall for him. He had his opportunity while Sammy was out and Hugo overtook him.
With the golden boy Rodwell coming through he was always just warming a spot behind Sammy and Hugo even without DCE coming.
I wish him well. He has done some good things at times. Just not consistent enough.

I hope he has a fruitful NRL career. I like him and think he has some great raw ability it seems to be a mental game with him. If he went to a club with less expectations and spotlight he could do well. Was linked with Cowboys and whilst they might be a good fit on paper, him and Dearden are both instinctive smaller players so I’m not so sure.

Not sure where he ends up but it won’t be to a contender imo. I could see him going to Souffs to be honest in which my first sentence of this post is retracted.

He’d be better off going to Parra. He’d get a start and fit in well with Moses.

                    Good luck to the kid.

A competent goal kicker too. I’m happy with Hugo, Walker and Rodwell. His chances at us are limited.

Sandon is currently behind Savala, Walker & even Townsend it seems

next year it will be behind Walker, DCE & Savala - probably even Elliot & Rodwell

Watson has that #14 jersey and Ioelu is the backup there

There is just no room for Sandon, in saying that he should still see out his contract next year at the Roosters and would be the perfect signing for the Bears for 2027....

good luck to him. has talent and maybe he'll make it as a regular nrl player but we've got better options
