  • The tackle on Wong.

If a defender sprints up with clear intensions to smash the ball runner and there's a head clash, imo it should be deemed a reckless high tackle - Penalty - Sin Bin - Minimum 2/3 weeks suspension.

It's clear that the defenders technique was compromised by his intent to smash the ball carrier which lead to the head clash and concussion to Wong.

Furthermore, it should be the defenders responsibility to get it right!. Any contact to the head albeit accidental should be illegal.

It’s a rough game. Accidents happen. Fair tackle. Play on.

Most penalties that are awarded for contact to the head with the shoulder are accidental so why should it be any different for a head clash? The idea is to minimise concussions! That tackle was reckless. Wong was concussed and taken off. He will most likely miss next round.

Ball runners slip before contact making it impossible for the defender to pull out. They inevitably make accidental contact to the head and it's a penalty then placed on report.

For the last few years if defender runs in hard and has a head clash it has been an automatic penalty with emphasis on duty of care from the tackler. Last night seemed to be either a mistake from the ref or a rule change that I am not aware of.

          Agree.
There was plenty of heat in last nights game.
2 heads coming together is an accident. Either player can come out of it worse off.
The main thing is that Wongy is OK, which it looked like as he was assisted off the field.

Well, it usually is when it's an Easts defender!

Mistake? I think you left out the word 'deliberate' preceding it.

If it was against any other team it would have been a penalty. It happens regularly but apparently not when the victim is a Roosters player.!

No issue with the head clash, accidents are going to happen.

It was Keeley who put on a blatant shoulder charge, the fact that it was reviewed and not called a shoulder charge and then 1 minute later Toia was put on report for a shoulder charge and we were penalised for a shoulder charge that didn't even connect in the second half by the exact same ref and bunker who overlooked the first incident is the issue I have with it.

All the players involved in the push and shove being charged with contrary conduct is an embarrassing look for the game too, we used be unapologetic about being a violent game. These days feels like we are jumping at shadows to appease a certain part of the public who will never follow our game or care about it anyway.

I note Molo received a Grade 2 Careless High Tackle charge. Presumably this was the hit on Whyte, for which we received no penalty. Surprise, surprise!!

I would have no issue if it wasn't the case that:

                            - There had just been an incident for which 4 players had been sin-binned and everybody had been told to calm the fark down or face consequences.

                            - He was 'jamming in', which in itself has been the target of previous crackdowns. Refs are instructed to go hard on players who make mistakes while 'jamming in'.

                            - The circumstance was reckless. Told to calm down? Nope instead he goes in trying to make a hero tackle where he 'jams in', a mate eggs him on (pushing him into a more dangerous tackle) and heads clash.

Without the context sure... mistakes happen. However in context I think there's an argument that his act of 'jamming in' put him in a reckless position that significantly heightened the risk of contact with the head.

This is ignoring the fact we'll now be without Wong for at least a week and this coulda cost us the game. It didn't but if that was the defining moment of the game after guys had been told to cool the fark down or face consequences then I'd be p!ssed. As it is... I'm glad the little b!atches spiralled outta control and ended up shooting themselves in the foot by doing so. Had the ref binned him then we mighta lost so I'm happy to accept what happened as part of the narrative.
