Sad news on the passing on one of our greats from the 70's

    https://www.nine.com.au/sport/nrl/ne...30-p5mizq.html

Johnny Mayes was one of my faves from the 70's, any highlights from the 70's you see, he is in the thick of it.
Won three consecutive comps with two different teams ...40 years before Cooper Cronk did it. A truely great Rooster !

    Condolences to his family

That is sad news , RIP Rooster legend.
Was hoping he was well enough to travel for the 1975 team reunion the other week to catch up with some old team mates but wasn't to be.

If he was still playing today he would be the instant fix to the Roosters halfback problem.

        A true champion footballer.

Johnny Mayes was a real favourite amongst the kids. Arguably the best backer upper the game has ever seen. Think Terry Lamb without the cheap shots.

His defence for a small bloke was impeccable. Chopping down blokes twice his size with beautiful technique rather than brute strength.

A local junior who played with Johnny Peard at Bondi United in the same team. Johnny Peard wrote in his book that he and Monkey Mayes used to hate playing Paddo Colts because Bunny Reilly played for them. They were so glad when they were all drafted to Easts because they could play WITH Bunny instead of against him.

A reunion in Footy heaven indeed for Big Jack, Big Artie, Bunny and Johnny Mayes.

On a slightly different note, always felt a bit bad for Kevin 'Run for yor Life at Spring St, Junkyard' Junee. Sliding doors moment which rewarded.Mayes more than him.

Remember sitting in the Nobel stand with my dad in 75 GF and seeing Mayes take the pass from Bruce Pickett and then scoot towards where we were sitting to score the opening try of a very memorable roosters afternoon.

I was fortunate to see Johnny play and witness his scoring of the first try in the ‘75 GF at the Paddo end of the ground. The clubs reel of some highlights just fantastic and special note on Russell Fairfax pass which was poetry in motion with a full body movement and the torpedo flick pass of Johnny Brass.

Very sad news. I never saw Johnny play but he is a true Roosters legend and a very important member of that exceptional 1975 team. Condolences to his family.

I was reading that he quit school and "retired" from playing football at the age of 14, after the death of his father. He had to go to work to support his family. Then a few years later he was able to take up footy again. They bred them tough in those days.

RIP Johnny and condolences to all family and friends.

Very sad. Too young to have watched him play but from highlights and reading about him he certainly is not just a Roosters legend but a legend of the game.
                              EASTS TO WIN!
