  • An Inconvenient Truth

I wholeheartedly believe we will not win another premiership with Trent Robinson as coach so long as the 6 again rule remains in place. Either that or it will take another 10 years minimum.

We have become predictable, the same mistakes happen every week regardless of the personnel and we do not have the temperament or ability to adapt our game to the new system. Roosters footy is redundant. Robbo seems to enjoy explaining how he does things instead of actually doing things nowadays. He is a legend that is synonymous with the club and should remain with the club. Perhaps head of the academy maybe. The day to day coaching and tactical message seems to have fallen by the wayside. Too complicated. Our forwards always look lost, we make dumb errors every week and our defence hasn’t been good for 6 years, the same time the stupid new rules came in.

I hope everything I’m saying is wrong and utter garbage for the sake of the team winning. I’d like nothing more but I fear it’s the truth we all know deep down.

If we can't beat Melbourne with all but one of their spine missing we never will. Coach Robinson has no answer to the Storm style of play and while he remains head coach.

All Bellamy and every other coach need to use as strategy against is to wait for our errors and they’ve got the game won and we will willingly comply.

from what i can see the way the 6a is important is that we rarely get them. that's not on robbo

Yeah that’s not his fault, but all the other things errors, we have the worst completion rate of all teams and I bet we’re close to worst in errors also, reserve grade defence, zero composure all these things have not been fixed or at least improvement none of it.
If Robbo wasn’t feeling the heat he sure will be now.

I can't figure why EButch gets in the 17. Big fan of Losalu and think more minutes will give us another Whyte.

Correct to beat the Chooks you just bide your time cause they'll start dropping the ball or having Einstein moves like kicking early when nobody knows it coming and just hand back easy possession.

It’s just the way he coaches nowadays aswell. He isn’t pragmatic, he seems to be narrative driven or have pre conceived ideas on how things will play out. The Townsend thing is an example. Probably wanted to give Chad a send-off against his old club and show that his recruitment was a stroke of genius. It wasn’t it, it backfired. Rarely does Robbo do the basics well and pick what the team needs to get a win.

It’s always apart of some grand plan to out think the room. It’s coaching rugby league it’s not that difficult. Our players look lost and the game plan always looks complicated.

How many times do our forwards receive the ball from a standstill position? Leads to lost field position and errors. How often do Penriff players get the ball with no momentum, at stand still. Almost never. It negates the likes of Collins, Angus and especially Spencer. We only seem to be able to score off set plays on tackle 1 or tackle 2 when scoring a close range try.

Our attack at the try line is clunky and we rely on ad lib footy from our very talented players to get points. Manu was completely underused in his last 2 seasons and now Mark is aswell. Needs to look for the ball, can’t seem to get him ball in promising positions. It all looks out of whack and the grace period is over, it’s been 5 years. Yes we can beat the alsoran teams and that’s great, but if we want to walk the walk and play for premierships every year, we need to aim up. Our roster has consistently been one of the strongest in the comp during Robbo’s tenure. He’s made more recruitment decisions and they’ve turned out to be failures aswell, leads me to think he doesn’t actually have an answer to fix the issues.

Robbo after every presser seems to be carefree and analytical. Talks about the state of game and the opponents players more than our own team sometimes. Talks like he thinks it’s all going to come together and the warning signs are just blips towards our ultimate goal. Well those blips have been happening for half a decade now. The drums really need to get louder.

I don't know if what OP is saying is correct but I also don't think it's fair to say the game has passed Robbo by, since the 6 again rule was implemented we've finished 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 3rd, I can see us sneaking into the 8 this year as well although probably barely, I think it was 2 years ago where we nearly knocked off Melbourne with Teddy and a NSW Cup backline, we probably would've been more competitive last year with Walker available to us also.

I think for us a lot of issues come from our players. Tupou is a 34 year old winger who has seemed past it in defence for a little bit now yet he remains, Nawaqanitawase is phenomenal but still learning at this level, Walker needs an experienced hand to guide him around and Watson whilst showing great versatility at hooker isn't actually a hooker. Other key players such as Smith, Toia, Hugo, Whyte, Foketi, Wong and Blake Steep are all under 50 games into their careers as well.

Robbo could be past it or maybe the players aren't in a position to actually build towards a premiership right now, I do think that 2026 will be our best year to date and I do think we'll win the comp with the additions of Robson and DCE.

Robbo is the Chad Townsend of coaches.
He couldn't do anything with the best roster in the NRL over the last few years and he can't do anything now.
Being a good talker on the finer points of Rugby League doesn't make you a good coach.

Robbo didn't have the best roster though, where we've lacked the most since the 2019 grand final is the spine, look at the spines of the final four teams last year:

                      Melbourne: Papenhuyzen, Munster, Hughes, Grant

                      Penrith: Edwards, Luai, Cleary, Kenny

                      Sharks: Kennedy, Trindall, Hynes, Brailey

Us: Tedesco, Keary, S. Smith, Watson

                      ---

Out of those 4 I'd say we were easily the worst spine there and even our full strength spine of Tedesco, Keary, Walker and Smith would've been weaker than the Sharks offering. Melbourne and Penrith spines obviously decimated ours which is why Melbourne pumped us by 30 with 7/8 tries coming from those key spine players.

Next year Robbo will probably have the second best spine in the comp with Tedesco, Walker, Cherry-Evans and Robson available to him, in my opinion that spine is second only to Melbourne.

To be fair their spine of Grant, Hughes and Meaney ain't bad. Yes we're still behind the eight ball if we can't beat them without Pappy and Munster but then again whatcha gonna do?

We ALMOST got over the line and that's been the story of our season. We're just not quite good enough to finish anybody off, ay!
