  • Story about the academy - Nick's gone from buying high $$$, to developing early

    https://www.roosters.com.au/news/202...-the-roosters/

Where we used to buy high priced players at the top of the market, now we are developing players from the start of their careers. I can't remember the last time we had a more exciting crop of young players coming through.

And the benefit of doing it this way, to use Rob Toia as an example, is we get the first 3-5 years of his career, at a bit of bargain price.

They could even end up being his best years, or his only years, if he was to have injuries, or not go on, or whatever.

But if he becomes one of the game's premier centres over those 3-5 seasons, he'll then get the highest price deal of his career. Player prices are based on what they've done previously. And we got all of Toia's brilliant plays for 3-5 years at a much cheaper price that what he'll cost in the future.

And if a player's retention price is ridiculous, after those first 3-5 years, and if you have a good pathways system, you let him go.

Let one of your opponent clubs buy the guy at the top of the market.

We're getting Hugo for $180,000 a season now. His next deal will be $500k+. For him, it better be with us. But that's not the case for every player.

That's the genius of the pathways system. Aubo and Jake and whoever else is involved, obviously Robbo, deserve great credit.

And doing that frees up the cash to upgrade the required young guys who you got for a bargain, or buy the occasional high priced player when you need to.

The club has turned 180 degrees from the bad old days, and the future is bright.

Really cool story. This is a good insight in to the acedemy, how ever I would love to know a little more. About who lives at the acedemy(players) now or who has graduated through that system in to first grade and now living elsewhere.
Excited to see what we can produce through the academy over the next 5 to 10 years.

I have always thought it would be cool for Roosters to bring out a YouTube series following a players week leading up to a game. This would be pretty cool to add to that as well

I was a rolled gold sceptic of the Academy up until about round 6. Thought it was a pipe dream. Happy to have been proven very, very wrong.

Savala's value will skyrocket if we make the GF. I reckon he has the right temperament for big games. You can already see how composed he is in clutch moments.

            $700k plus imo.

I love the kid and I hope we don't lose him!

Agree, he's cold blooded. Rare in a kid. Rarer in a kid half.

With more time and gaining in confidence I look forward to seeing Hugo’s running game get better and better.

Hugo and Sammy eventually in the halves is mouth-watering.

The academy idea the result the of winning a premiership. The club is always about the big picture unlike the minions of the NRL.

Agree with all the foregoing…really makes the play for DCE the most perplexing signing…maybe ever…as the academy previously didn’t exist when the need for a marque player could be justified, but certainly not now, and definitely not DCE in the marque category.

Even the greatest youth developing sporting teams in any sport around the world still sign players. We should focus on youth but if we don't have the youth in positions we need to fill we shouldn't be opposed to going to market either.

IMO he knows his product too. Can remember a poddie a few years back when Whyte was maybe 15/16 and Nick was like 'OMG that kid Whyte's got a massive future ahead doesn't he!!!' He was the single guy Nick pointed out who'd make it in the forwards and based on this year's form he's not wrong.

That said we've always had a mixture of both and it's an easy story to say we've suddenly changed our policy. I reckon all our recent premierships have involved having a core group of Roosters juniors and then two or three well planned marquees.

Cheese, Sua'ali'i and Young didn't work. Mark N, Robson, [maybe] DCE... we will see. It's not as if we're put a permanent hold on marquee signings. We simply offloaded two overpaid duds this season. Life goes on.

"Of the initial 10 players to enter the Academy Units, 5 have already made their NRL debut with the Roosters – an incredible strike rate.
There have been 7 debutants in total from the Academy program".

                            Who are the 7 players?

                            Wong
                            Toia
                            Foketi
                            Steep
                            Benny

Were the Va'a boys in the Academy?

Great strike rate and future stars.

Sandon Smith was the OG academy debutant
