  • Which Teams Are On The Good Side Of The Whistle In 2025

Which teams are on the good side of the whistle in 2025?

Fatima Kdouh's article in the Daily Tele today, titled "Rub of the green: How many penalties, set restarts each NRL team has been awarded and conceded in 2025" reveals all.

Teams ranked 1-17 in order of "good side of the whistle".

We break down how many penalties and set restarts every team has been awarded and has been conceded in 2025.

I'm yet to learn how to link articles to this forum from my phone.
If anyone can, it would be very much appreciated.

Basically, teams from 1st to 17th, in order of "good side of the whistle" are:

    Roosters ...

    ...16th.

    1. Sharks
    2. Dolphins
    3. Sea Eagles
    4. Warriors
    5. Rabbitohs
    5. Bulldogs
    5. Dragons
    8. Eels
    9. Knights
    10. Titans
    11. Tigers
    12. Storm
    13. Panthers
    14. Raiders
    15. Cowboys
    16. Roosters
    17. Broncos

    cont'd:

Team's ranking is decided by "Infringement Differential"

    Sharks...1st...
    Infringement Differential = +39

    Roosters...16th...
    Infringement Differential =
    -20

    xxx

    Souths...5th
    Infringement Differential =
    +5

Souths are giving away the fewest penalties on average, just 4.6 per game; and are faring well too for penalties awarded at sixth best in the NRL.
Almost 60 percent of their tries this year have been scored on the back of a penalty.

      Roosters

      16th

      Penalties Conceded: 77 (6th)
      Penalties Awarded: 56 (17th)
      Set restarts Conceded: 25 (17th)
      Set restarts Awarded: 26 (17th)
      Infringement Differential: -20, (16th)

The Roosters are hardly hearing the referees whistle or the set restart bell in 2025. While the Roosters are giving away the fewest restarts, they are getting the least in return of any side in the competition. Of the 77 penalties conceded, forward Angus Crichton has given away 12 so far this year - the equal most in the competition.

Was it 2014 when we played the same amount of games as Souths and received 100 less penalties than they did? It was just under 4 less penalties received per game

Yep we finished on top of the ladder and received 135 penalties (last) and they finished 3rd and received 219 (1st). Next best were the Dogs at 178.
Total penalties were marginally down on the previous year. They received 31% more. We received 17% less.
We also conceded more penalties than anyone.
            Differential. Souffs +42 (1st). Easts -59 (last).
We won 6/27 penalty counts. They won 17/27.

They were by far the best disciplined team that year by a mile.....apparently.

The 2014 premiership was gifted to those c**ts.

              Fark souffs!

Souffs received 6, of that very impressive 219 penalties, in the second half of our prelim against them - to our zero. After we led 12-0 early in the game.

That was gentle Ben "off your head" Cummins. The man who penalised and later sin binned Braith Anasta in a game for being punched full force in the mouth by a Souffs player. A more farcical sight you'll never see than Anasta standing there with blood gushing from his mouth while Ben admonished him, "the penalty's going against you Braith".

Cummins was a devoted and staunch roosters basher over the years. He never recovered psychologically after the "6 again" saga of the 2019 GF, in which he was blamed by all and sundry for "helping" the roosters win a premiership (which was very far from his intention, and also very far from accurate). A broken man, he retired soon afterwards.

But he can rest easy, secure in the knowledge his cheating, match fixing spirit lives on resplendently in Klein and Sutton.

Aha - and I see we have the misanthropic Klein managing our game on Sunday.

I unfortunately refrained from taking the $2.90 on offer for Qld in fake of origin on Wednesday - that was easy money I should have taken.

Once again Cowboys are $2.80 on Sunday. We are still yet to win a single game under Klein or Sutton this year, and cowboys are coming off a thumping last week.

I really should take those odds.

wow, i didn't realise that was the breakdown.
when it comes down to penalties turns out we don't have a discipline problem. the problem is that our opponents collectively play more by the rules than they do against other teams.
with restarts again our opponents infract less against us.
is there a reason other than unconscious bias?

I know, right? What a joke.

It's statistically proven that it's physically painful for refs to blow a penalty to us or wave their hand in the air for a set restart to us.

Top teams tactically give infringements away to ensure their defensive line is set.

I would normally only be concerned about the infringements received, but with the ease of scoring this year we haven't spent too much time in the opposition 20m.

                          Well colour me surprised.
1985: 1 try vs Parramatta, 1 try vs Manly, 1 try vs Wests, 2 tries vs Souffs
1986: 2 tries vs Illawarra, 1 try vs Balmain, 2 tries vs Norths.

If you have over 50 % possession , high set completion rate and low errors it doesn't matter what a ref does or not.
