Plenty of young people can afford to buy - go to any auction and you'll see. If you can't, move to a cheaper area. You can buy a unit down here for 400k.

Back in 1990 i wanted to get into the property market but Sydney prices were out of my reach-so i headed west and i purchased a house in Prestons- 90k and got a 50k bank loan. 4 years later i wanted to buy another-but again Sydney prices were too much- so i followed my siblings lead and headed west again-this time Perth- and got a 3 bedroom house that was a a 60 second walk to the beach for 100k.

Both times i wanted to by in Summer Hill/Canterbury- but bad luck for me and i headed to where i could afford.

As my old man used to say "Australia offers a lot of opportunities, it's up to you to make the most of it".....this was a guy who landed in Belmore as a teenager from Italy by himself and not knowing a word of english- just on the promise of a job, which to him was everything.

So to those who complain the cost of housing is Sydney is way too high i say go further out to where you can afford because Sydney prices are never going to go to the levels were you want them to be. Either whinge, which will get you nowhere, or actually do something about it

It doesn't mean we should ignore the fact housing is 3-4 times higher relative to wages today than it was in the 70s, and even worse carry on like exceptionalists with no idea of the government policies that have affected house prices.

Non-homeowners will soon dominate the votes and will come after all of us with everything from means-tested healthcare and much higher land taxes (hello Victoria!). Show at least a tiny bit of empathy and good will and they might let you keep at least one house to live in.

Great post. The difference between your Dad's day where the attitude was "wow, what an opportunity we have here in this great country if we work hard - and I'm going to have a crack" whereas now 25% on welfare and so many work for the government, and most of the rest just hate the country in general or are too stupid to even care... they just whinge and want more for free.

I'm in my 50s so it doesn't bother me too much we're all good, but honestly, this country is a shadow of its former self. For the younger people, those younger people who actually get it, not the uni activist fools, in 5 years time it will be so much worse.

I have 2 children dice 33 & 30 that at this stage dont look like buying a house in Sydney because they're not willing enough to save money.
They both have well paid jobs & even though I taught them the 70/30 rule (spend 70% on living & 30% on savings) they havnt listened.
Me Im 55% living 45% save & have always had money even though Im not a high income earner.
I know Sydney house prices are high but no body says you have to stay living in Sydney
Couple of things both my children will inherit 2 bedroom apartments in Wentworth Point
2nd thing not everyone has a goal of owning a house in Sydney & some like my kids are happy to rent in Suburbs like Concord & Randwick because of life style.
I admit Ive been very lucky in life to be able to buy property in Sydney & even luckier to inherit 1 million & 70 thousand last year.
I didnt really choose what was going to happen to me it just happened so I live the cards Ive been dealt.

1993- i moved in with my sister and now husband in a duplex in Manning Rd Double Bay that my old man owned. Rent was cheap- Italians dont charge their kids board/rent....it was temporary while i sorted myself out and my sister finished Uni. I never had any long term intentions to stay in the east but i met my missus and that was the non-negotiable part-she would go no further than Double Bay-not even Edgecliff. I used to say (and still do when warranted) in my best snobby voice "Banrrrnkkstown,how ghhhhaaaastly". I wanted to move to Condell Park-near Bankstown trots!!

Always been a Rooster though- used to wear the jersey to school with 7 on the back- Kevin Hastings was my idol- still is !!!!
